The Miami Open is on to the final day of the quarterfinals. One of the biggest matches of the day sees World No. 2 Jannik Sinner take on World No. 20 Frances Tiafoe. The match begins at 1:00. p.m. ET.
Sinner is -5400 on the Moneyline on DraftKings Sportsbook, while Tiafoe is +1440. This is my best bet to target for the Sinner vs. Tiafoe match.
Jannik Sinner vs. Frances Tiafoe Preview
Frances Tiafoe has started to find his game over the past few weeks. Tiafoe made the Mexican Open final in the lead-up to Indian Wells, and then made it to the Round of 16 at Indian Wells, where he lost to Alexander Zverev. Frances Tiafoe is now into the quarterfinals here in Miami, where he faces a massive test against Jannik Sinner. This is Tiafoe’s first time in the Miami Open quarterfinals since 2019, when he lost to Denis Shapovalov. Tiafoe has been unable to consistently hit the heights that so many American tennis fans hoped he would when he made the 2022 US Open semifinals. However, an upset win over Jannik Sinner to get into the semifinals of the Miami Open would be one of the biggest wins of Tiafoe’s career.
Jannik Sinner has been on a warpath since he got to Indian Wells. It was a disappointing start to this season for Sinner, losing to Novak Djokovic in the semifinals of the Australian Open, where his rival, Carlos Alcaraz, was able to complete the career Grand Slam. Then, Sinner was knocked out of the Qatar Open early by Jakub Mensik. Sinner had to relinquish his title as World No. 1 to Carlos Alcaraz. He is now determined to get that ranking back. He took his anger out on the field at Indian Wells, cruising through the tournament without dropping a set. Sinner has now won 28 consecutive sets in Masters 1000 events, an ATP record. Although Tiafoe’s fellow American, Alex Michelsen, made it tough on Sinner in the Round of 16.
Jannik Sinner vs. Frances Tiafoe Pick, Best Bet
My best bet for this match is for Frances Tiafoe to cover the spread of +5.5 games. Sinner has been flawless in terms of not dropping a set from Indian Wells to Miami, but that doesn’t mean he is steamrolling his competition. Alex Michelsen, the No. 40 player in the world, challenged Sinner hard in the Round of 16. Sinner ended up winning 7-5, 7-6, beating Michelsen by just three games. Going back to Indian Wells, against both Daniil Medvedev and Joao Fonseca, Jannik Sinner had to go to a tiebreaker in both sets, beating both of those opponents 7-6, 7-6.
It was also not that long ago that Sinner was beaten by Jakub Mensik in Qatar. Tiafoe beat Mensik in the Round of 32 here in Miami. The transitive property does not always apply in tennis, but the point is, Sinner is not untouchable. Frances Tiafoe is a solid, experienced player, playing some of his best tennis in recent memory. He should challenge Sinner in this match and keep it within 5.5 games.
