Warner Bros. and Peter Jackson have announced that a new Lord of the Rings film is set to enter production. The biggest part of the news is that massive Lord of the Rings fan Stephen Colbert will be a part of the team writing the screenplay for this film.
There is already a new Lord of the Rings film in production, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. This is a story set during the events of The Fellowship of the Ring, based on writing in the appendices of Peter Jackson’s novel. Unlike in the film, where Frodo leaves with the ring immediately after Bilbo’s 111th birthday party, in the book, there is a 17-year gap between the time Bilbo leaves The Shire and Frodo leaves The Shire.
This film will focus on the time period just before Frodo leaves The Shire. During this time, Gandalf hires Aragorn to track down Gollum, as he believes Gollum is going to reveal information on the whereabouts of the ring. So, the film will primarily feature Aragorn, Gandalf and Gollum. It is not yet confirmed if Sir Ian McKellen, Elijah Wood or Viggo Mortensen will be reprising their roles. However, Andy Serkis, who played Gollum in the original trilogy, will be directing this film.
What is The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past?
The Lord of the Rings: The Shadow of the Past also focuses on events that take place during The Fellowship of the Ring book. In the film, Gandalf tells Frodo to head for The Prancing Pony in Bree. The next day, Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin head off for Bree. They run into a couple of obstacles along the way, but it is a very quick journey compared to the book. In the novel, Frodo moves to a new house, the hobbits interact with different characters and they run into various spots of trouble not shown in the movies. This film would go into deep detail about this journey from The Shire to Bree with our four favorite hobbits.
Which characters will be in The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past?
The four primary characters in the film would be Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin. The bulk of the story is the four of them on this journey together. It has not been confirmed whether Elijah Wood, Billy Boyd, Dominic Monaghan and Sean Astin would be reprising their roles. It would be great to see the four of them back together, though it would likely make sense to hire younger actors to match their ages in 2001.
Gandalf would likely be featured at the beginning of the film, and Aragorn would be featured at the end of the film. The most prominent new character would likely be Tom Bombadil. He is a mysterious creature, somewhere between a hobbit and a man, who rescues the hobbits on several occasions during their journey to Bree.
