Tomorrow is the closest thing to a holiday for sneakerheads — Air Max Day. What is Air Max Day, you ask? Is it just a clever bit of marketing by one of the most legendary marketing companies of all time? I’ll get into all of that below as well as some of the models releasing on Nike’s big day.
What is Air Max Day?
March 26 has been dubbed Air Max Day since 2014, designed to give some love to the long-running Air Max series that, along with the Air Jordan line, helped revolutionize the sneaker game and make Nike the company we know it as today. March 26 is the anniversary of the release of the iconic Air Max 1, which first released on March 26, 1987.
The Air Max 1 was the first shoe to bring visible Air to the world, inspired by a trip to Paris taken by sneaker design GOAT Tinker Hatfield. After seeing the Centre Pompidou and its famous “inside-out” design, Hatfield had the idea to showcase Nike’s Air technology by cutting a window into the heel of the midsole. It feels obvious now, but at the time it was a controversial move that nearly cost him his job. Thankfully, Hatfield had a couple of notable champions in Rob Strasser and Peter Moore, who helped give him enough cover to get the shoe out and let it become a hit. The Air Max 1 didn’t just succeed — it launched one of Nike’s most iconic franchises, including the noteworthy Air Max 95, which will be a big focus for this year’s Air Max Day campaign.
Since the first Air Max Day in 2014, Nike has marked the occasion with special releases intended to celebrate the history of the line. These include retros such as special editions of the Air Max 1 and the Air Max 1 ’86 OG Big Bubble as well as collaborations with brands like Concepts and Patta and new Air Max models, such as the Air Max Dn, Air Max Dn8 and this year the Air Liquid Max.
Is Air Max Day a marketing gimmick? Probably. Has that stopped it from being a success and filling sneakerheads’ social media timelines with various Air Max sneakers? Not in the least.
What sneakers are releasing on Air Max Day?
As always, we’ve got several notable releases to celebrate Air Max Day this year, especially when it comes to the legendary Air Max 95. Originally designed by Sergio Lozano, the 95 was inspired by the human body and remains one of Nike’s most iconic sneakers. Here are some of the shoes releasing on Air Max Day 2026.
Air Max 95 Big Bubble “Greedy”
- Where to purchase: Nike
- Retail Price: $190
My personal highlight of the 2026 Air Max Day release calendar, this shoe, like several previous “Greedy” editions of the 95, takes inspiration from “bits and pieces from the shoe’s long history and uses them to accent the hairy suede gradient upper.” The mix of bright colors isn’t going to be for everyone, but it’s a fun mix-and-match that highlights everything that makes the Air Max 95 iconic. Pair that with the elevated materials used on the upper, and this feels like the standout release of Air Max Day 2026.
Air Max 95 Big Bubble Volt and University Red
- Where to purchase: Nike
- Retail Price: $190
This version of the 95 pulls from the legendary Neon colorway, mixing it with bandana-inspired detailing across the upper. This drop sticks close to the original design, with layered synthetic leather and mesh, while hits of University Red and Volt pop against the black base.
Women’s Air Max 95 Big Bubble Pink Foam
- Where to purchase: Nike, Foot Locker
- Retail Price: $190
A more traditional looking edition of the Air Max 95, Nike notes that this colorway stays “true to the original human anatomy-inspired design, rippling layers of synthetic leather and airy mesh stack the upper in a gradient that runs black to white” while “playful pops of Pink Foam accentuate the lace loops, branding and Air soles.” This feels like the most GR colorway of the 95 releasing on Air Max Day.
Patta x Nike Air Max 1 White/Hyper Crimson
- Where to purchase: PattaxNike
- Retail Price: $150
This is not yet officially confirmed, but reports suggest that this latest colorway of Patta’s Air Max 1 “waves” series will drop on their shared PattaxNike site on Air Max Day. A Pure Platinum/Hyper Crimson colorway dropped earlier this year, and this edition features a grey upper, white waves and a hyper crimson Swoosh on top of a sail midsole. All of the various editions of the Patta Air Max 1 have been relatively popular, although none quite as popular as the first colorways that released in 2021, and I imagine this edition will be no different.
Air Max 90 Infrared
- Where to purchase: Nike
- Retail Price: $150
The most iconic colorway of the Air Max 90 returns for Air Max Day 2026, featuring a clean upper with premium suede detailing. This colorway has dropped before, and it will drop again in the future. This isn’t the most exciting release, but if you’re in need of an updated edition of the legendary colorway, or if you’ve somehow never owned it before, now is your time to act.
Air Liquid Max
- Where to purchase: Nike
- Retail Price: $230
Every year, Nike uses Air Max Day to launch the latest addition to the Air Max line, and this year is no different. Making its debut will be the Air Liquid Max, which Nike recognizes will be a love it or hate it kind of shoe. That being said, they claim that “it’s one of the most comfortable Air Max shoes to date. Every step feels fluid and smooth thanks to the drop-in Cushlon Midsole stacked on top of the point-loaded Air system.” This is certainly not going to be for everyone, but if you like loud, maximalist sneakers, this is exactly that.
Marketing gimmick or not, Air Max Day still delivers and this year is no exception. Best of luck to all looking to pick up one of these kicks on Air Max Day! And to see more of this month’s releases, check out our release date calendar.
