The 5–12 line is where the bracket starts heating up with temptation, and this one has all the right accelerants. Wisconsin enters at 24-10 with one of the sport’s sturdier program brands, its 28th NCAA tournament appearance, and a path through March that usually carries a certain institutional calm. High Point arrives at 30-4 as the best team in school history, the highest seed the program has ever earned, and a back-to-back Big South champion still chasing its first NCAA tournament win. That contrast is what makes this game feel alive before the ball even goes up. Wisconsin has to validate the version of itself that just lit up Chicago. High Point gets to show up as the offense nobody from the power leagues is entirely comfortable pricing. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for today’s March Madness college basketball game between the Wisconsin Badgers and the High Point Panthers.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
Wisconsin vs. High Point prediction, preview
High Point is dangerous here because the offense explosive and structurally nasty. The Panthers average 90.0 points per game, shoot 49% from the floor, and commit only 9.1 turnovers per game. Underneath that, the advanced profile is even better: 1.181 offensive efficiency, 54.7% effective field-goal percentage, 57.1% on twos, a huge 0.429 FTA/FGA, and a 30.7% offensive-rebound rate. That is a three-lane scoring machine—rim pressure, foul pressure, and put-backs—with elite ball security baked in. Wisconsin’s offense is excellent too, but the defensive response is shakier than a favorite laying this many points usually wants. The Badgers allow a 51.3% opponent eFG, rank just 213th nationally in opponent two-point percentage at 52.3%, and give up a 0.305 opponent FTA/FGA. So this is a matter of High Point scoring in exactly the ways that can stress Wisconsin’s softer defensive seams.
And High Point has more individual punch than the public-facing version of this game usually admits. The clearest star is Kezza Giffa (G), who led the Panthers at 14.6 points per game last season on 149 made field goals and 498 total points, while also getting to the line enough to produce a 12-made-free-throw game-high during the year. Kimani Hamilton (F) is the interior scorer Wisconsin has to feel all afternoon—13.1 points per game, 52.0% from the floor, and a team-high 159 made field goals. D’Maurian Williams (G) adds 13.5 points per game on 47.2% shooting, giving High Point another real scoring wing instead of a roster that leans on one creator and a prayer. Then there is Bobby Pettiford (G) at 8.8 points per game on 58.2% shooting, Chase Johnston (G) with a team-high nine made threes in a game, and Juslin Bodo Bodo (F/C), who posted a 21-rebound game during the season and gives the Panthers another body for the second-chance fight. That is what makes this offense annoying: there is primary scoring, there is finishing, there is wing support, and there is enough frontcourt rebounding to keep bad possessions alive. It is a balanced, adult offense rather than a one-guard carnival ride.
The recent-form player story is still where Wisconsin starts looking a little combustible. The Badgers were magnificent in Chicago, but they also had to burn through a huge amount of backcourt shotmaking to get there. John Blackwell (G) dropped 34 points and 10 rebounds against Washington, then 31 more against Illinois. Nick Boyd (G) followed his 23-point Washington game with a career-high 38 against Illinois, and the Badgers are 8-0 when Boyd and Blackwell both score 20-plus. Boyd is averaging about 20 points per game for the season, and in Wisconsin’s own top-10-opponent split he sits at 21.8 points per game, including 29 vs. Michigan State, 25 at Illinois, 24 vs. Purdue, and 22 at Michigan. Blackwell has been just as central: three 30-point games this season, one double-double, and leading the Badgers in scoring 12 times. The Badgers’ ceiling is real. But the shape of it matters. Wisconsin’s best recent basketball has been powered by two guards sustaining absurd offensive volume while the team still shows real vulnerability on the glass and around the rim—including the Washington game, where the Badgers were out-rebounded 45-29, gave up 20 offensive rebounds, and lost the paint 40-24. That is the exact kind of stress point a team like High Point is built to poke.
High Point vs. Wisconsin pick, best bet
The deeper you get into Wisconsin’s Chicago week, the more this starts to sound like a live upset instead of a cute upset. The Badgers survived Washington 85-82, came back from 15 down to beat Illinois 91-88 in overtime, and then lost 68-65 to Michigan on a shot with 0.4 seconds left. They were magnificent, but they were also forced to live at full emotional voltage for three straight days. There is a version of this spot where that week becomes proof of Wisconsin’s ceiling. There is another where it becomes evidence that the Badgers just played the best basketball they had in them and now get a 30-win offense with nothing to lose. That second version is the one the number is quietly inviting you to consider. Wisconsin is the likelier winner. High Point is the side with the better price on its path.
That is why the bet is High Point moneyline (+370). The Panthers can win this game by getting downhill, by living at the stripe, by creating second shots, and by making Wisconsin prove it still has one more incandescent backcourt performance left after spending so much of itself in Chicago. I think the swing is justified.
Final score: High Point 81, Wisconsin 79.
Best bet: High Point (+370) vs. Wisconsin
