Project Hail Mary is being released in theaters nationwide on Friday, March 20th. Since production was announced by MGM back in 2020, this has been a much-anticipated project (no pun intended) for filmgoers. Gosling, a three-time Academy Award nominee, is no stranger to sci-fi epics. He previously starred in Blade Runner: 2049 (2017). This is the actor’s first movie since 2024’s The Fall Guy.
What is Project Hail Mary about?
The protagonist of Project Hail Mary is Ryland Grace (Gosling), who wakes up on a spaceship. The science teacher turned astronaut has no idea who he is, where he’s going, or why he’s even in a spaceship. Based off of Andy Weir’s 2021 novel, the rest of the story centers around Grace’s attempts to solve this intergalactic mystery. In addition, Ryland needs to figure it all out by himself…or does he? Without giving too much of the plot away, the fate of Earth depends on this one-man mission.

As previously mentioned, Project Hail Mary stars Gosling as Ryland Grace. Although much of the movie takes place on an isolated spaceship, there’s several other cast members worth mentioning. Second billing goes to fellow Oscar nominee Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall). The German actress will portray Eva Stratt in the upcoming film. Milana Vayntrub, James Ortiz and Liz Kingsman co-star as well.
