Detroit has built a real identity this season, and that’s a huge reason why the Pistons are sitting at 49-19 instead of doing whatever they were doing during Cade Cunningham’s first few seasons with this team. This is a team that defends with purpose, keeps mistakes to a minimum, and has enough size and rim pressure to make life miserable for softer frontcourts. Detroit is allowing just 23.4 opponent APG, the best mark in the league, which tells us a lot about how connected this defense is possession to possession. Even with Cade Cunningham now sidelined by a collapsed lung, the Pistons still have a pretty clean roster fit. Jalen Duren gives them vertical spacing and easy paint offense. Tobias Harris can settle things down without needing the ball every trip, and Ausar Thompson brings the kind of slashing and defensive activity that fills in gaps all over the floor. Detroit is not a particularly explosive 3 point team, but it doesn’t really need to be when it can win the glass, get downhill, and keep opponents from generating clean offense in rhythm. And that’s not saying that they aren’t benefitting from some distance shooting. Newly acquired Duncan Robinson has been useful on this squad, averaging seven 3PA on 40% shooting from three. His floor spacing has been hugely useful for the Pistons’ offense. They should get Cunningham back either before or during the first round of the playoffs, but this team looks like a real contender right now.
Washington is still very much in the messy stage of a rebuild. You can see it in both the numbers and the on-court fit. The Wizards have talent, but a lot of it overlaps in ways that don’t always produce on both sides of the floor. Bub Carrington, Tre Johnson, Bilal Coulibaly, Kyshawn George, and Alex Sarr all bring something intriguing, but this roster is still learning how to turn individual flashes into actual cohesion. Too often, Washington games become a string of developmental possessions rather than a fully connected offensive system. The defensive issues are horrid. The Wizards allow 123.8 opponent PPG, and they just do not hold up well once stronger teams start getting into the paint or forcing rotations. That’s part of why Detroit was able to bully them physically in the first matchup, and it’s also why Washington’s occasional offensive bursts can feel a little misleading. Carrington’s 30 point night in the last game was impressive, but the bigger picture is still a team with a -10.8 scoring margin that’s frankly just leaking everywhere. Next season, at least, will be interesting once Washington can field their newly acquired star duo of Trae Young and Anthony Davis, whose strengths complement each other quite nicely, at least on paper.

The Wizards just covered this spread two days ago, and they could get close again tonight. It makes sense for Detroit to be a heavy favorite tonight, where 87% of the bets have been placed on the Detroit side due to their cohesion, organization, and frankly, just being way better. That being said, Cunningham’s absence creates some margin for the Pistons to make mistakes. He’s their main advantage creator and best offensive organizer, so his absence matters. Asking the Pistons to win by huge numbers get shakier with his absence. Without the reliability and consistent offense generated by Cunningham, it won’t take much for the Wizards to cover again.
