I predicted a Real Madrid win in the first leg, but I certainly wasn’t expecting a three-goal advantage as we head to the second leg in Manchester. Real Madrid executed their game plan to perfection. They soaked up the Man City possession and territory and used their pace on the counter-attack to create chances. Now they have forced the Citizens to climb a mountain in the second leg.
The game script for this game will be similar, but likely even more dominance with the ball and field position from Man City. They have no choice but to go all-out attack to try and overturn the three goal deficit, and that will leave space for Real Madrid to run into going the other way. I wouldn’t be surprised if Madrid scores in this game, but I think Man City will win it. Although it likely won’t be enough to advance, I see Man City getting the win. Real Madrid can afford to sit back and defend their lead, and even if they let a few goals slip through, one goal going the other way will likely finish this Round of 16 contest.
These teams have met up a ton in the Champions League in recent seasons. Since 2024, there have been six matches between the sides, with three or more goals being scored in every game. I expect more goals to be scored in this one and a Man City win. That, however, won’t be enough as Real Madrid will advance on aggregate.
