The 2026 World Baseball Classic is into the quarterfinal stages in Miami, Florida on Saturday. With the knockout format now in full swing, everything is on the line for Venezuela and Japan as these contenders battle tonight at 9 p.m. EST. On one hand, the Venezuelans do show makings of a potential tournament winner, but they’ll have to get through the reigning champion Japanese side to punch a ticket into the semis. Plus, we get a stud matchup on the mound between MLB talents.

Venezuela vs. Japan prediction, preview
Venezuela
Venezuela finished second in Pool D after losing to the Dominican Republic in the final game of the opening round, but a trip to the quarterfinal is still just a fine consolation prize… even if the matchup is a very tough one. This roster beat the Netherlands 6-2, Israel 11-3, and Nicaragua 4-0 prior to that 7-5 loss, totaling 26 runs across four games. They’re slashing .278/.365/.444 as a team with an .809 OPS that ranks sixth in the entire field, and their 22 strikeouts are the second-fewest as they show great discipline at the plate. While the Venezuelans have just five home runs, they do have seven stolen bases as well, second-most of any team.
The batting order is led by Luis Arraez, who’s hitting .500 across his 14 plate appearances with four doubles, nine RBIs and two homers. Maikel Garcia is batting .429 with three RBIs, and Ronald Acuna Jr. has a .308 average with a 1.141 OPS, hitting a homer with two stolen bases as well. Ezequiel Tovar has looked good in limited appearances, but it’s worth noting Jackson Chourio and Salvador Perez haven’t performed up to par yet behind the plate.
As for the pitching staff, Venezuela’s team has a 2.75 ERA and 1.06 WHIP, logging 36 strikeouts and only nine walks overall.
Japan
The champions of the 2023 World Baseball Classic, Japan is undefeated heading into tonight’s contest after dominating in their pool. They defeated Chinese Taipei 13-0, Korea 8-6, Australia 4-3 and Czechia 9-0 to conclude Pool C action. The Japanese scored 34 runs across their four games thus far, slashing .301/.442/.545 for a .987 OPS as a team. That OPS is third-best of any team in the WBC field as well. They also tallied a total of eight homers while walking 29 times and recording a tournament-low 19 strikeouts at the plate. Truly, they’ve displayed excellent process at the dish and can give their opponent’s pitching staff a run for its money.
Who else would headline this roster other than superstar Shohei Ohtani, who’s OPS is a ridiculous 2.025 (albeit in a tiny sample of just nine at-bats). He’s recorded five hits with six RBIs and two home runs, also drawing four walks in the process. Seiya Suzuki is also hitting .333 in his nine at-bats with two homers as well, drawing a team-high five walks. Masataka Yoshida has looked quite good across 12 ABs with six hits for a .500 average and two homers of his own, and Sosuke Genda of the Japanese NPB has four hits in seven plate appearances along with three walks.
Looking toward the hurlers, Japan has the third-best ERA at 2.12 along with a tournament-best 0.82 WHIP. They’ve struck out 49 batters and walked a tourney-low eight as well.
Venezuela vs. Japan pick, best bet
On DraftKings Sportsbook, Japan is a -190 Moneyline favorite while Venezuela holds +155 odds to upset outright. The combined run total sits at 7.5.
For Venezuela, lefty Ranger Suarez takes the mound tonight looking to shake off a slow start in his lone appearance during WBC play. He went just 2.0 innings while allowing three hits and an earned run, striking out one batter and walking another. For Japan, right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto is on the bump. He went 2.2 innings in his lone start without allowing a hit, walking three and striking out two.
Venezuela has what it takes to survive and advance, and the underdogs do have more MLB talent across the roster. While Suarez is a fantastic hurler, Yamamoto was absolute nails in the World Series back in October and proved his ability to rise and meet the moment. He should be nearly untouchable while he’s out there, and while the pitch limit will ensure he doesn’t go too long, the Japanese staff behind him has also been excellent so far in this tournament. After going undefeated in pool play, I like Japan to continue this run of form and stay unbeaten tonight. I’m taking them on the -1.5 run line with plus odds.
