Tennessee Volunteers vs. Auburn Tigers prediction, pick for SEC Tournament on Thursday 3/12/26

Auburn gets a quick-turnaround tournament shot at Tennessee, but the current form is what makes this quarterfinal feel live. The Tigers have scored 79 or more in five straight games, then opened their SEC tournament run by drilling Mississippi State 79-61 on Wednesday behind 22 points from Kevin Overton. Tennessee still brings the cleaner résumé at 21-10 and the rest edge as the No. 5 seed, but the Vols have also been living in tighter recent games, with four of their last five decided by four points or fewer. That is the tension in Nashville: Auburn is the hotter offensive team right now, Tennessee is the sturdier team overall, and the spread asks the Vols to create more separation than this recent form really promises. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for tonight’s college basketball game between the Tennessee Volunteers and the Auburn Tigers.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Tennessee vs. Auburn prediction, preview

Auburn walked into Nashville looking much more dangerous than a No. 12 seed. The Tigers have now scored 79, 79, 88, 84, and 79 points in their last five games, then opened the SEC tournament by beating Mississippi State 79-61 behind Kevin Overton’s 22 points. Tennessee is the sturdier team overall and the higher seed at 21-10, but the current form is not screaming for a two-possession Vols cover. The market sat around Tennessee -5.5 with a total of 145.5, and that feels rich against an Auburn team bringing real offensive rhythm into the building.

Auburn has scored at least 79 in five straight, with 88 on LSU, 84 at Alabama, and 79 against Mississippi State in the tournament opener. Tennessee’s last five have been much choppier on that end: 69 at Vanderbilt, 69 at Missouri, 69 against Alabama, 78 at South Carolina, and 82 in the home loss to Vanderbilt. That is why Auburn +5.5 makes more sense than an Auburn moneyline swing. TeamRankings still likes Tennessee more in the broad last-five profile, with a 22.8 Last 5 Rating to Auburn’s 11.8, so this is not a better-team argument. It is a shape-of-the-number argument. Auburn’s offense is hotter, Tennessee’s full-team floor is better, and those two truths together make the points matter more.

Overton has scored in double figures in seven straight games, dropped 26 at Oklahoma, 24 at Alabama, and 22 against Mississippi State, and set an Auburn SEC Tournament record with six made threes on Wednesday. Tahaad Pettiford put up 24 against Ole Miss, 27 against LSU, and 19 at Alabama. Keyshawn Hall had 26 at Oklahoma, 21 against Ole Miss, and still leads Auburn at 20.2 points per game. Tennessee has counters, but they are arriving in a different way. Ja’Kobi Gillespie had 26 against Alabama, J.P. Estrella scored 22 at South Carolina and 20 against Vanderbilt, and Felix Okpara had 20 against South Carolina. Nate Ament is the biggest swing piece in the matchup, but even with positive reports, his workload certainty was still murky entering Thursday. Auburn’s best recent players are perimeter scorers already in rhythm; Tennessee’s best recent answers have leaned more on frontcourt structure and patchwork offense. That is a real difference when the dog is catching more than one bucket.

Auburn vs. Tennessee pick, best bet

The Vols beat Auburn 77-69 on Jan. 31, won the glass 46-30, and got to the line 31 times while Auburn took 20 free throws. If Tennessee recreates that exact rebounding mauling, Auburn can lose this bet cleanly. But the recent-form context makes that first meeting less final than it looks. Tennessee’s last five games include margins of four, four, two, 19, and four. Auburn’s recent games have been messier, but the offense has stayed alive even in defeat. Tennessee is playing a lot of close games because the offense has not been creating easy separation lately. Auburn is playing high-variance games because the offense can still drag it back into the fight. In a series Tennessee’s own notes describe as eight straight meetings decided by nine or fewer, averaging 5.6 points, laying more than two possessions is a tougher ask than the seed line suggests.

Auburn already got a live run at Bridgestone, held Mississippi State to 61, and posted its fewest points allowed against an SEC opponent all season. Tennessee has the rest edge and the better long-view profile, but Auburn has the more useful game-in-the-building receipt and the hotter perimeter group entering this afternoon. That is the part of the handicap I want to weight hardest now. Tennessee still has more stable ways to win the game. Auburn has more recent evidence that it can score enough, late enough, to keep this inside the number. Auburn +5.5 is the bet, playable to +4.5. The way it dies is Tennessee turning the game into another second-chance avalanche, but all signs still point to Auburn’s current offensive form being too live to dismiss.

Final score: Tennessee 76, Auburn 73.

Best bet: Auburn +5.5 (-110) vs. Tennessee
