North Texas and Florida Atlantic finished in the same 9-9 American cluster, and the bracket gave us the most honest possible separator. The No. 6 Mean Green are 18-13, the No. 7 Owls are 18-14, and one side enters fresh while the other had to grind through Temple on Wednesday night just to get here. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for tonight’s college basketball game between the North Texas Mean Green and the Florida Atlantic Owls.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
North Texas vs. FAU prediction, preview
FAU did beat Temple 63-59, but that win came with 17 turnovers, seven assists, and a rough 7-of-12 night at the line, even while shooting 50% overall and 55% from three. North Texas has not been explosive, but it has been built for this exact environment late in the year: a 62-58 road win at UAB where it held the Blazers without a field goal for the final five minutes, then a 62-58 home win over Rice after erasing a 17-point deficit. Season-long, UNT allows just 67.4 points per game, holds opponents to a 48.7% effective field goal rate, limits them to 52.6 field-goal attempts per game, and creates 8.9 steals per night. FAU scores more cleanly at 77.4 points per game with a 52.3% effective field goal rate, but North Texas owns the sturdier defensive floor and the dirtier game script.
FAU still has real pop—Kanaan Carlyle (G) went for 26 at Wichita State, 19 in the Charlotte overtime win, and 22 against Temple in late February, while Niccolo Moretti (G) just posted 19 points in 38 minutes in the Temple tournament game. Josiah Parker (F) has also become a huge part of FAU’s current floor, with 11 rebounds against Temple, nine against Charlotte, and 18 points with nine boards in the first North Texas meeting. But the cleaner late-game engine belongs to UNT. Je’Shawn Stevenson (G) hung 29 on FAU, including 24 after halftime, and David Terrell Jr. (G) has been the steadier table-setter with 16 against FAU, 17 at UAB, and 15 against Rice. FAU has more offensive juice. North Texas has the more trustworthy backcourt script when the game gets tight.
FAU vs. North Texas pick, best bet
The cleanest receipt on the board is still the Feb. 22 game in Denton, because it showed North Texas winning even when Florida Atlantic played the prettier offensive game. FAU shot 47% from the field, 47% from three, piled up 19 assists, and turned it over only six times. It still lost 73-72 because North Texas won the glass 40-29, won offensive boards 13-6, and earned a 29-14 free-throw attempt edge that turned into a 22-9 scoring gap at the stripe. That is why I do not want to over-romanticize FAU’s shotmaking path. The Owls can absolutely win if Moretti and Carlyle own the care game again and the whistle normalizes, but North Texas does not need a beautiful offensive night to cash this spread. It needs the same repeatable things it already proved it can get in this matchup—extra possessions, contact, and late free points.
FAU averages 36.4 first-half points on the season, while North Texas averages only 30.4, so I do not love paying for a UNT first-half favorite. But the Mean Green become themselves after the break. They average 37.0 second-half points, and their recent box scores fit that exactly: 41 after halftime against FAU, 41 after halftime at UAB, and 39 after halftime against Rice. Meanwhile, FAU is turning this game around less than 24 hours after a mistake-heavy tournament opener. In a one-possession spread, I would rather trust the rested team with the better late-game identity than the team asking its guards to stay razor-sharp on short rest.
I keep landing on North Texas -1.5. FAU has the higher offensive ceiling and enough shotmaking to make this uncomfortable, which is why I am not pretending this is some blowout script. But the recent-form version of this matchup keeps pointing the same way: North Texas is defending better, living better in ugly games, closing halves and games with more authority, and already beat FAU once while losing the shooting battle. I would play UNT to -2.5 and leave the total alone, because 137.5 can get bent by FAU’s shooting or by a whistle-heavy ending. The ticket gets shaky if FAU’s guards turn this into a clean spacing game and finally shrink that rebound-and-free-throw deficit.
My score is North Texas 69, Florida Atlantic 65.
Best bet: North Texas -1.5 (-110) vs. FAU
