History of the Air Jordan 13 Chicago
The Air Jordan 13 was worn by Michael Jordan during his final season, aka “The Last Dance,” with the Bulls in 1997-98. Like almost all of his seasons in the 1990s, the campaign would end with another Larry O’Brien Trophy, although Jordan famously laced up the Air Jordan 14 to defeat the Jazz and make Byron Russell a part of NBA history.
Designed by the sneaker design GOAT Tinker Hatfield, the shoe paid tribute to MJ’s Black Cat persona. Hatfield said in the book Driven from Within that he had “this flash of consciousness about (Jordan) being a predatory cat.” What Hatfield didn’t know at the time was Jordan’s closest friends had given him the nickname “Black Cat,” leading MJ to ask how Tinker knew about that. Once again, a sign of how in sync MJ and Hatfield truly were. There will never be another sneaker designer/athlete duo like these two.
The shoe reflected MJ’s “Black Cat” persona with a paw-like outsole and holographic “cat eye” toward the heel. The shoe also featured Zoom Air and a carbon fiber plate for comfort and support. For the Chicago colorway dropping on Saturday, SNKRS notes that:
From the quilted overlay, sculpted midsole and holographic eye, it comes fully equipped with all the signature details. This edition mixes premium leather and textiles with a classic balance of white and University Red for a game-winning finish.
The Air Jordan 13 originally dropped just as Jordan Brand (then known as Brand Jordan) was breaking away from Nike and becoming its own subentity. This was reflected in the “CEO Jordan” commercial that accompanied the shoe’s release.
The commercial might not have featured Spike Lee’s Mars Blackmon, as previous Air Jordan commercials had, but Lee did have a connection to the shoe. Famously, Denzel Washington picked up a pair in the classic movie, He Got Game. On the court, the shoe was worn by Mike Bibby at Arizona during March Madness in 1998. So the Chicago 13s returning right as the Madness gets ready to begin (Arizona is +450 on DraftKings Sportsbook this year) makes perfect sense.
The 2026 edition of the Chicago 13s is available on StockX and has an average price of $247 on 935 sales over the last three months. The last time the Chicago 13s dropped was 2017, and that retro edition currently has an average price of $273 on 74 sales over the last three months on StockX. Jordan retros have continued to sit a bit of late, so it’s likely these won’t be a hard get. That being said, best of luck to all looking to pick up a pair!
