The PGA TOUR is back at TPC Sawgrass for the 52nd playing of THE PLAYERS Championship. The course is set up to provide maximum drama with water in play on 16 of the 18 holes and risk/reward decisions at every turn. The famous island green at No. 17 is just one of the holes with a wide variance in results, which usually leads to plenty of excitement all week long. Akshay Bhatia Top 20
Bhatia stormed past Daniel Berger last week at the Arnold Palmer Invitational to claim his third-career PGA TOUR win. Bhatia’s big finish was the culmination of a great start to the season. He’s reeled off four straight top 20 finishes coming into TPC Sawgrass, where he finished T3 last year after missing the cut in 2024 in his tournament debut.
He leads the elite field in Total Strokes Gained over the last 16 rounds and ranks in the top 12 of Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green, Strokes Gained: Around-the-Green, and Strokes Gained: Approach. Bhatia’s iron play has been outstanding, and his putter has also been rolling well entering THE PLAYERS. While it’s not the same course, there are lots of similarities between Bay Hill and TPC Sawgrass, and if he can stay locked in with his irons and out of the water, Bhatia should be set for another top 20 this week.
Ryan Fox Top 40
Fox is a solid play this week to notch a top 40 finish. The 39-year-old from New Zealand has played this event each of the last three seasons, finishing T27 in 2023 and T20 in 2025 around a missed cut in 2024.
Fox has quietly put together a very strong start to 2026 after picking up a pair of PGA TOUR wins last year. He began the year on the DP World Tour with a T27 at the Dubai Invitational and a T45 at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic. After arriving on the PGA TOUR, he posted a pair of T24 finishes in Phoenix and Pebble Beach, a T7 at The Genesis Invitational, and another T24 at the Palmer last week.
While he hasn’t had a monster win like Bhatia, Fox is a consistent par-maker and can contend on difficult tracks like this one. He ranks in the top 20 in the field in Total Strokes Gained over his last 16 rounds, and he converted 24 of 30 scrambling opportunities last week at Bay Hill. If he continues that kind of success this week, he should be in the top 40 for a fifth straight tournament to start the season.
Tournament H2H Matchup (3-way) Davis Thompson over Jason Day
In this 3-way matchup, I’m taking Davis Thompson over Jason Day. As a reminder, a 3-way matchup scores a tie as a loss not a push, so Thompson will need to finish at least one stroke ahead of Day this week to complete my SGP.
Thompson has made the cut in four straight tournaments, although he didn’t have a top 30 until last week. He didn’t qualify for the Arnold Palmer Invitational, so he played the Puerto Rico Open instead. He started with an even-par 72, but then he got rolling with a 69-65-69 to gather momentum and finish alone in fourth place. Thompson has made the cut in two of his three career trips to THE PLAYERS, with a T10 last year as his best showing. The 26-year-old from Georgia has shown a very high ceiling when dialed in, and I’ll back him after he flashed signs of finding his game last week in Puerto Rico.
Jason Day has been trending the other way. The 38-year-old veteran had a T2 to start the season, but he missed the cut at both The Genesis Invitational and the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Both of those events were much smaller fields and had minimal cuts, so the fact that he missed both is a little alarming. Day won THE PLAYERS back in 2016 and finished T35 last year, but his current form makes him easy to pick against.
