Canada vs. Puerto Rico 2026 World Baseball Classic prediction, pick for Tuesday 3/10/26

Things are coming down to the wire in Pool A of the 2026 World Baseball Classic, with only two days of round robin games left before the knockout stage of the tournament. That said, tonight’s tilt between Canada and Puerto Rico is an odd one.

On the one hand, this contest seems very important. It’s a clash of the two favorites in Pool A, and the final game in San Juan for Puerto Rico, who has already qualified for the quarterfinals, which will be held at Daikin Park in Houston on Friday and Saturday. However, it’s not technically a must-win spot for Canada, despite the team falling to Panama this past weekend. If anything, Canada’s Wednesday matchup with Cuba looms largest, as that’s the game that will decide the second squad to advance out of Pool A.

Still, there’s plenty to play for this evening. Trust me. Let’s preview everything you need to know about this 7:00 p.m. ET WBC tilt with the help of some odds and lines on the DraftKings Sportsbook.

Canada vs. Puerto Rico prediction, preview

There are never any “meaningless” games at the WBC. Not when run differential matters as much as it does, or with relegation for the 2029 World Baseball Classic a real threat to the bottom-feeders of each pool. Yes, Puerto Rico did punch its ticket to the knockout round with a 4-1 victory over Cuba on Monday in San Juan, yet it has not yet clinched the top seed in Pool A. Why does that matter? Well, that will likely be the difference between playing the Americans or Mexico/Italy this coming weekend in Houston.

That said, there’s a fine line between not playing to win and not giving yourself your best chance to win. Puerto Rico is not going to roll over for Canada this evening — especially not in front of a raucous crowd at Hiram Bithorn Stadium — however, it may also choose to give a couple older players some rest. I also think it’s unlikely we see either Edwin Diaz or Fernando Cruz in this one, as each stud reliever threw an inning against Cuba. We definitely won’t see former Twins and Red Sox RP Jovani Moran, as he threw 35 pitches across two scoreless innings on Monday. By World Baseball Classic rules, Moran will now need at least one day’s rest, meaning Puerto Rico will be down a proven LHP in a matchup with a very lefty-heavy Canada lineup.

You could make the case that Canada is also holding back it’s best on Tuesday. MLB veteran Cal Quantrill will be saved for Wednesday’s all-important meeting with Cuba, which means the Canadians will turn to Jordan Balazovic this evening. The 27-year-old right-hander is a former fifth-round pick of the Twins, who did reach the majors and make 18 appearances out of the bullpen in 2023. Balazovic then split 2024 between Triple-A and the KBO, where he transitioned back to a starter’s role. In 2025, now in the Tigers’ system, Balazovic was used as both a starter and out of the bullpen, maintaining a 3.75 ERA across 57.2 innings of work.

Jose De Leon will toe the rubber opposite Balazovic. The 33-year-old has had a similar journeyman’s path in affiliated ball, throwing 72.0 innings at the MLB level in his career with five different organizations — most recently 6.2 innings in a spot start on the final day of the 2025 regular season for the Red Sox. Unlike Balazovic, De Leon was not especially good in his time in Triple-A last season, registering a 6.93 ERA in 75.1 innings. The main issue? How about a 14.4% walk rate? The fifth-highest mark among all pitchers with at least 70 innings thrown in the International League. Woof.

It’ll be interesting to see how Canada’s bats respond in this seemingly advantageous matchup, especially after a tough showing versus Panama. The Canadians lost 4-3 after an error-filled sixth inning that cost the team three unearned runs. However, Canada also stranded a small village of runners in scoring position. Josh Naylor, Owen Caissie and Abraham Toro all have at least three hits in the club’s opening two games of pool play, but more is needed from Tyler O’Neill and Otto Lopez. Manager Ernie Whitt might also benefit from a lineup shake-up, as leadoff man and Rockies’ infielder Edouard Julien has been ice cold in the leadoff spot.

Canada vs. Puerto Rico pick, best bet

Best Bet: Canada ML (+195)

Puerto Rico does have home field advantage, but in a contest between two pretty evenly-matched rosters, I have to take a chance on the side that’s paying out almost 2/1. Canada’s odds have also been coming down all morning long, so it’s clear the sharp money is backing the Canadians. Despite being undefeated, Puerto Rico is slugging just .298 at the WBC with a .619 OPS. This lineup is sorely missing Carlos Correa and Francisco Lindor.
