Despite this being a game between a Premier League team and a Championship team, I expect this game to be closer than expected. Southampton were relegated from the Premier League just last season, and now sit in eighth position in the Championship with a slight chance to get themselves into a playoff for promotion. On the flip side, Fulham are mid-table in the Premier League, sitting in 10th position.
These teams played twice last season, with Fulham winning the away leg, but Southampton got a point at Craven Cottage.
I have confidence in the Saints to put up a good fight in this one, largely because of their recent form. They are undefeated in nine straight games in all competitions, winning seven of those and drawing two. On the flip side, Fulham are coming off a home defeat against relegation-threatened West Ham, meaning they have now lost four of their last six Premier League games.
There is a reason why Fulham are the favorites for this one, but I don’t see any value in the Cottagers. I’d rather take my chances at much better odds with a scrappy Southampton side in fine form at the moment.
