After a three-month hiatus, Formula 1 is officially back in action! There are some shakeups to the sport with the addition of a new team to the field along with numerous changes to technical regulations that we’ll finally get a true look at during the opening race, setting the stage for an enthralling first weekend of action.
As has been tradition for most of the last 25-plus years, the new season begins with the Australian Grand Prix. With drivers starting their engines at 11 p.m. EST on Saturday, March 7 for North American viewers, we’re taking a look at the circuit, its location, and some historical context of this event. Where will the 2026 Australian Grand Prix take place, and what do bettors and fans need to know?
Where is the 2026 Australian Grand Prix?
The Australian Grand Prix has been renowned as an iconic opening race for the F1 season for over two decades now. The event initially served as the season-opening Grand Prix beginning in 1996 and remained the first one of every season through 2019. It was replaced for a few of years by the Austrian and Bahrain Grands Prix, but Formula 1 returned to the traditional Australian circuit last year, naming it the opener for future seasons as well.
This race is held at Albert Park in Melbourne, the largest city in Australia. This track has hosted the Australian Grand Prix since 1993 and is a semi-permanent street circuit surrounding the park itself. It measures in with a length of 5.378 kilometers (roughly 3.34 miles, for those using the Imperial system) with drivers taking a total of 58 laps around the circuit. There are 14 turns, including a couple of particularly tight corners at Turn 3 and Turn 13.
The lap record at Albert Park is 1:19.813, set by Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc in 2024. However, he did not go on to win the event that year.
Leclerc did emerge victorious in the Australian Grand Prix two years prior in 2022, which was the first year in which the event was held following a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic. In 2023, Max Verstappen took first on the podium before Leclerc’s Ferrari teammate Carlos Sainz Jr. won it the following season. Last year, Lando Norris finished first among the field.
There are some noteworthy trends to watch for when race day arrives this weekend. The biggest one by far is that this circuit at Albert Park may be cursed, depending on who you listen to. Each of the last three winners — Leclerc, Verstappen, and Sainz — failed to finish in Melbourne during the same event in the following season. Now, Norris will put that streak to the test with his opportunity.
As for some additional facts, Ferrari have won the most Grands Prix in Melbourne with 10 victories. Additionally there hasn’t been a repeat individual or team winner since 2018 when Sebastian Vettel won in back-to-back years. Perhaps most interesting, though, is that per F1’s official release about the Australian Grand Prix, the last three pole positions have been taken by the driver who went on to win the World Championship. At the time of publication, qualifying has not yet taken place to decide who will begin at the head of the grid.
