Lehigh Mountain Hawks vs. Holy Cross Crusaders prediction, pick for Patriot League Tournament on Thursday 3/05/26

Stabler Arena should feel like a bracket building tonight. The Patriot League tournament finally stops being theory and turns into a single-elimination night where one bad ten-minute stretch ends a season. The No. 2 seed Lehigh Mountain Hawks host the No. 10 seed Holy Cross Crusaders at 7:00 p.m. ET on ESPN+, with Lehigh trying to convert a late-February surge into a clean quarterfinal and Holy Cross arriving as the classic already-survived-once visitor that plays freer than its record suggests.
Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for tonight’s college basketball game between the Lehigh Mountain Hawks and the Holy Cross Crusaders.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Lehigh vs. Holy Cross prediction, preview

Holy Cross plays slow at 67.0 possessions per game, Lehigh plays faster at 70.3, so this should live in the high 60s unless the game gets whistle-heavy. The bigger divider is efficiency at the venue: Lehigh’s offense is 1.094 points per possession at home, and it has been running hot lately at 1.221 over the last three and 1.311 last game. Holy Cross’ defense away is the opposite of stout at 1.140 points per possession allowed, so Lehigh’s cleanest path is simple: good shots early, play from in front, and make the underdog chase possessions instead of dictating them.

That script is powered by two Lehigh levers that travel inside a tournament game. Nasir Whitlock (G) is the league’s headline scorer at 20.8 points per game, he’s at 43.1% from three, and he just dropped 32 on Senior Day, the kind of heater that bends an opponent’s whole shot diet. Hank Alvey (F/C) is the interior pressure point, and the matchup-specific number is brutal: he’s averaging 24.0 points and seven rebounds against Holy Cross on 73.3% shooting across the two meetings. Holy Cross’ counterpunch lives with its guards. Tyler Boston (G) just authored a survive-and-advance box score at Lafayette with 17 points, 14 assists, and nine rebounds, and Gabe Warren (G/F) hit them for 23. Holy Cross also brings real closure competence at the stripe, sitting at 76.6% on the season, so their late-game life comes from making every empty trip sting.

Holy Cross vs. Lehigh pick, best bet

Holy Cross protect the ball as well as anyone in this league, sitting at 10.2 turnovers per game, and they have stayed at 12 or fewer giveaways in 22 of their last 24. That is how underdogs keep favorites from separating. They can also turn this game into a free-throw grind if the whistle tilts their way, and they just went a perfect 18-for-18 at the line in the opener. Then you add the loudest variance door in the matchup: Lehigh has gone nine-of-35 from three across the two meetings, and if that cold script shows up again, the spread becomes brittle. The rebuttal is that Lehigh has shown a real front-runner profile, going 12-3 when leading at halftime, and the first-half environment points toward them landing the first punch at home. Lehigh scores 35.9 first-half points at Stabler, while Holy Cross gives up 38.4 first-half points away, so the game most naturally starts in Lehigh’s rhythm.

Holy Cross is on the short-turn grind after winning at Lafayette 82-77 on Tuesday, while Lehigh has been sitting since Saturday and gets to start this quarterfinal with fresher legs in its own gym. Translate that into basketball: Lehigh has been playing like a front-runner lately, winning five of its last six, and the run includes an 89-79 Senior Day win over Bucknell plus road wins at American (78-73) and Lafayette (78-69), with the only slip a 72-49 dud at Navy. That matters early because Lehigh’s first-half scoring at home is 35.9, and Holy Cross’ first-half defense away is bleeding 38.4. If the Mountain Hawks land that first punch, their profile says the game tilts fast, because they are 12-3 when leading at halftime.

Holy Cross still brings the exact tournament traits that keep underdogs alive, so the close-late risk is hot. They protect the ball at 10.2 turnovers per game, and they have stayed at 12 or fewer turnovers in 22 of their last 24, which keeps favorites from building margin off giveaways. Then you add the most important Tuesday detail: the Crusaders went 18-for-18 at the line at Lafayette, so if this turns into a whistle game, they can keep scoring even when the half-court stalls. That is why the rest edge matters twice: it is not just legs, it is whether Lehigh’s defensive stance and rebounding effort show up early, because their margin engine is loud and binary at this time of year. They are 9-0 when they win the rebounding battle, so a fresh host that controls the glass can create extra shots without needing a perfect shooting night, and that is how a -5.5 favorite actually covers in a quarterfinal.

That’s why the best bet on this board is Lehigh -5.5 (-115), playable to -6. The cleanest matchup mismatch is Lehigh’s home offense (1.094 points per possession) running straight into Holy Cross’ away defense (1.140 allowed), with Alvey’s interior efficiency and Whitlock’s shotmaking giving the favorite multiple ways to score when the first action gets blown up. The cover should come from playing in front, winning the glass, and forcing Holy Cross to spend the whole night earning points late in the clock. The way it dies is also simple: Holy Cross stays surgically clean with turnovers, lives at the line again, and Lehigh’s threes repeat the 25.7% season-series funk, turning this into a last-two-minutes game where points are gold.

Best bet: Lehigh -5.5 (-115) vs. Holy Cross
