South Carolina Gamecocks vs. Tennessee Volunteers prediction, pick for NCAAM on Tuesday 3/03/26

Tennessee walks into Columbia with the cleaner pedigree, but this game is not built like a casual top-vs-bottom SEC blowout. The Vols are 20-9 overall and 10-6 in league play, yet they arrive off back-to-back losses. South Carolina is 12-17 and 3-13 in the league, but this is the Gamecocks’ final home game, and the program is honoring six seniors before tip. You know what that means: lots of projected home edge! Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for tonight’s college basketball game between the South Carolina Gamecocks and the Tennessee Volunteers.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

South Carolina vs. Tennessee prediction, preview

The Vols score 80.1 points per game and allow 69.2, good for a +10.9 margin. They also own a 52.0% effective field-goal rate, pull 43.0 rebounds per game, lead with 14.4 offensive boards a night, and sit at a massive 44.8% offensive rebound rate. South Carolina is at 75.9 scored and 76.6 allowed, with a -0.7 margin, a 50.5% eFG, and just 32.8 rebounds per game. The Gamecocks do have one clean offensive strength: they get to the line 21.6 times per game and hit 78.9% there, which gives them a real way to keep possessions from going dead when the half-court offense gets sticky.

The current version of Tennessee is less explosive than the full-season profile. The Vols’ last five scores are 73, 89, 69, 69, and 69. That works out to 73.8 points per game, and the more telling detail is the three straight games in the 60s. Their last five defensive results are 63, 66, 65, 73, and 71, which comes out to 67.6 allowed. South Carolina’s last five scores are 75, 62, 97, 63, and 68, which is 73.0 per game, but the defensive side is much uglier: 89, 76, 89, 72, and 87 allowed, or 82.6 per game. The Gamecocks have been volatile, not dead. They still own the 97-89 home win over Mississippi State in this stretch, and that matters because this angle is about early resistance, not pretending Carolina is the better 40-minute team.

The lead-guard layer sharpens that same script. Ja’Kobi Gillespie is Tennessee’s thermostat at 18.4 points and 5.4 assists per game, and his recent box scores show the burden plainly: 26 against Alabama, 19 at Missouri, 17 at Vanderbilt, and 16 against Oklahoma. He can absolutely carry a road half, but Tennessee is leaning hard on him right now. South Carolina has a real counterweight in Meechie Johnson. He is at 17.2 points and 4.3 assists per game, and Carolina’s own game notes say he has scored in double figures in 15 straight games with four 20-point efforts in the last five. His recent line backs that up: 20 at Georgia, 18 against Kentucky, 21 against Mississippi State, and 22 at Florida. If Carolina keeps the crowd hot, it will be because Meechie is getting downhill, touching the paint, and living at the stripe early.

Tennessee vs. South Carolina pick, best bet

Tennessee’s overall first-half profile is strong at 38.6 scored and 30.6 allowed, but the road-only version is much softer: 36.2 scored and 33.8 allowed. South Carolina’s full-season first-half line is 35.2 scored and 35.0 allowed, yet the home-only version is better on both ends: 37.0 scored and 32.7 allowed. Blend the road/home first-half splits and this projects closer to 35-34 South Carolina than to a clean Tennessee runway. Tennessee still owns the bigger full-game glass edge, but South Carolina’s home environment, foul-shot strength, and early split profile all point to a tighter opening 20 than the badge on Tennessee’s jersey suggests.

That is why the best angle here is South Carolina 1H +4.5. Tennessee is still the sturdier full-game side because the Vols rebound at an elite level and Carolina is a weak defensive rebounding team, but that same shape can take time to become margin. Early, the better read is that the Gamecocks feed off Senior Night, ride Meechie’s scoring and free-throw pressure, and keep the first half inside two possessions. The way it dies is Tennessee turning its offensive-rebound edge into a flood of second shots right out of the gate, but the stronger script still points to Carolina hanging in the fight before Tennessee’s deeper structure has time to stretch the game.

Best bet: South Carolina +4.5 1H (-110) vs. Tennessee
