Jeff’s King of the Court Picks for Tuesday, March 3
James Harden
Thumb fracture? No problem for The Beard. James Harden returned for the first time since suffering said relatively ambiguous injury and dominated against the Nets, finishing with 22 points, nine rebounds and eight assists. Even more impressive was the fact that Harden amassed as many points as he did on only nine field goal attempts. It was a vintage iso Harden performance, as he racked up 12 free throw attempts. With Donovan Mitchell likely still sidelined due to his groin injury, the veteran is poised to see another massive usage rate Tuesday against the Pistons. The Cavaliers will need him to be Superman to win that game, putting him in prime position to fill up the stat sheet.
Tyrese Maxey
With or without Joel Embiid on the floor, Tyrese Maxey has been a man possessed for Philly lately. The star guard has recorded at least 32 points three times over his last five outings, also amassing seven assists four times over said span. Across those contests, his usage rate has never dipped below 32%. If you somehow needed further convincing, it’s safe to say we’re looking at the face of Philly basketball for the next four or five years at a minimum. The Sixers will need to rely heavily upon their young playmaker to take down a tough Spurs team Tuesday night. Maxey should be in store for another huge outing.
Luka Doncic
On a slate where three players will share the King of the Court crown, it would be foolish not to include Luka Doncic in my picks. The stat-stuffing machine hadn’t shot it well coming out of the All-Star Break, so the last two contests he was more meticulous with his field goal selection, shooting above 50%. Now that he’s back on track, expect the MVP candidate to break out for a trademark Luka outing against the Pelicans. At his worst, we’re talking about a low-40s PRA result. At his best? No one in the league can match him.
