Cleveland State Vikings vs. IUPUI Jaguars prediction, pick for Horizon Tournament Play-In on Monday 3/02/26

The loser is done, and the winner gets top-seeded Wright State, so this is one of those Horizon spots where the game can start tighter than the season-long pace suggests. The regular season series split cleanly, with Cleveland State winning 99-86 at home and IU Indianapolis taking the return meeting 82-74 in Indianapolis. The bigger current-storyline piece is the skid: IU Indianapolis has dropped six straight, and Cleveland State has dropped seven straight to close the regular season.
Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for tonight’s college basketball game between the Cleveland State Vikings and the IUPUI Jaguars.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Cleveland State vs. IUPUI prediction, preview

Over the last five, IU Indianapolis is averaging 77.4 points scored and 85.0 allowed, while Cleveland State is averaging 78.4 scored and 92.8 allowed. That is a meaningful split inside two losing streaks: the Jaguars have been the steadier bad team, while the Vikings have been living in uglier defensive scripts. IU Indianapolis’ last five finals were 168, 160, 158, 161, and 165, so every one of those games still landed below the current full-game total band. Even the recent box scores show a little more first-half resistance than the season-long pace profile suggests: IU Indy trailed Oakland 43-33 at the break, then led Purdue Fort Wayne 43-40 at half, while Cleveland State’s regular-season finale at Robert Morris ended with the Vikings scoring just 64 total, including only 25 points in the second half. That is the core recent-form point here—both teams can still create pace, but neither has been carrying stable, trustworthy offense into March.

The player form also points more toward recent volatility than a smooth offensive climb. Kyler D’Augustino still anchors IU Indianapolis at 18.3 points per game, and Finley Woodward is up to 6.2 assists per game, ranking 21st nationally while sitting on the school’s Division I-era single-season assist record. The hottest scorer on the floor is Maguire Mitchell: he has scored in double figures in seven straight, and his last two games were a 25-point, 34-minute outing against Oakland on 9-of-16 shooting with five made threes, followed by 20 points in 33 minutes against Purdue Fort Wayne on 6-of-13 shooting with a 6-of-12 night from deep. Woodward’s recent table-setting is just as important to thebet: he posted nine assists against Oakland, then 10 assists against Purdue Fort Wayne. Cleveland State still brings the cleaner season-long shooting profile with Dayan Nessah at 15.5 points and 55.3% from the field, Tre Beard at 13.0 points, and Jaidon Lipscomb at 12.6, but the Viking scoring ceiling is different if Nessah is not fully right. Beard is not just a spacer, either—he is at 42.6% from three, 3.3 made threes per game, a 2.7 assist-to-turnover ratio, and 88.6% at the line, while Lipscomb is right behind him at 41.5% from deep.

IUPUI vs. Cleveland State pick, best bet

IU Indianapolis can still blow up an under with live-ball chaos. The season-long profile absolutely says that: 83.6 points per game, a +4.3 turnover margin that ranks eighth nationally, 20.1 assists per game that rank second nationally, and a nation-leading 69.2 field-goal attempts per game. That is a real pressure-and-volume identity. But the recent losses show why that profile is less automatic than it looks. Against Oakland, the Jaguars still lost 86-74 while getting mauled 60-30 in the paint and surrendering 28 fast-break points. Against Purdue Fort Wayne, they lost 87-81 despite shooting 49.2% overall and 40.0% from three, because they were outscored 42-32 in the paint, lost points off turnovers 16-7, and got buried 21-7 at the line. That is the distinction that matters for this bet: IU Indy can create tempo, but lately that tempo has not consistently translated into controlled, efficient offense—it has often created a volatile game that gets more fragile late than early. Cleveland State’s answer remains shot value, with the Vikings 7-1 when shooting above 50% from the field, and with Beard and Lipscomb giving them the best pure perimeter shotmaking on the floor.

That continuity question starts with Nessah’s shoulder. It was reported Monday that his availability was still uncertain after he missed the final four regular-season games, and Cleveland State went 0-4 in that stretch. Worth noting also that the Vikings scored 82, 86, 70, and 64 in those four games, and the most recent head-to-head still totaled only 156 even with Nessah scoring 24. That matters because the full-game under is exposed to the exact kind of finish this number implies. With the side sitting at roughly Cleveland State -1.5, the market is calling this a one-possession game, which means the 40-minute under has to survive late fouls, free throws, and timeout-driven possessions. The first-half under keeps the recent-form angle, keeps the Nessah uncertainty, and strips out the worst endgame tax on the board.

The best bet is still 1H Under 80.5 (-110), playable to 79.5. The way it dies is the obvious one—IU Indianapolis forces a couple of early live-ball turnovers, Mitchell stays scorching, and the game gets pushed into quick threes before either side settles. But the stronger recent-form case still points the other way: IU Indianapolis’ last five have played lower than its season identity, Cleveland State’s recent offense has been far less trustworthy than its season shooting profile suggests, and both teams are entering an elimination game on real losing streaks with more instability than rhythm.

The cleanest script is still an opening half that lands in the high 70s, something like Cleveland State 39, IU Indianapolis 38 at the break.

Best bet: Cleveland State vs. IUPUI u80.5 (-110) total 1H points
