Looking at the odds for tonight’s matchup, the Pistons enter as 4.5-point favorites and hold -192 odds of winning outright on DraftKings Sportsbook. The Magic hold +160 odds of winning outright, with the game total set at 224.5.

Let’s dive into a preview and prediction for this Sunday night NBA matchup.

Pistons vs. Magic preview

The Detroit Pistons maintain the top spot in the Eastern Conference, with a 44-14 record on the year. They enter this matchup coming off back-to-back wins over the Thunder and Cavaliers, and have won seven of their last eight games. On the season, Detroit has gone 30-28 against the spread, and the game total has remained under in 32 of their 58 games played.

Cade Cunningham headlines the production for Detroit, posting averages of 25.4 points, 9.8 assists, and 5.8 rebounds per game. Jalen Duren has taken a massive leap in his development, adding 18.5 points and 10.8 rebounds and helping to set the tone defensively. Duncan Robinson is the team’s top sharpshooter, shooting 39.7% from beyond the three-point arc en route to his 12.3 points per game, while Tobias Harris, Ausar Thompson, and Ron Holland II each play key roles in the rotation. Outside of Isaiah Stewart remaining sidelined as he continues to serve his suspension, Detroit enters with a clean bill of health.

The Pistons are scoring 117.5 points per game, which ranks eighth in the NBA. They also rank 11th in offensive rating, sixth in field goal percentage, 23rd in three-point percentage, and 14th in pace. Defensively, opponents are scoring 109.7 points per game against Detroit, which ranks fourth in the league. They also rank second in defensive rating, second in opponent field goal percentage, ninth in opponent three-point percentage, and lead the NBA in blocks and steals.

The Orlando Magic hold a 31-27 record and sit in seventh place in the Eastern Conference. They are looking to bounce back from a loss to the Rockets in the previous game, and they have gone 6-3 in their last nine. On the season, Orlando has 25-33 against the spread, and the game total has gone over in 30 of their 58 games played.

Paolo Banchero headlines the production for the Magic, especially with Franz Wagner remaining sidelined with his continued ankle issues. Banchero is averaging 21.7 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 5.1 assists per game. The Magic traded for Desmond Bane this offseason with the hopes that he could solve their spacing issues and elevate them to the contending conversation. Bane is averaging 20.3 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 4.1 assists, while shooting 39.1% on three-point attempts. Jalen Suggs, Wendell Carter Jr., and Tristan Da Silva play key roles in the rotation, and Anthony Black is listed as questionable with right quad contusion.

As a team, the Magic are scoring 115.0 points per game, which ranks 20th in the NBA. Orlando also ranks 18th in offensive rating, 20th in field goal percentage, and 25th in three-point percentage. Defensively, opponents are scoring 114.6 points per game against the Magic. This ranks 12th in the NBA, and Orlando also ranks 13th in defensive rating, 24th in opponents’ field goal percentage, and 14th in opponents’ three-point percentage.

Pistons vs. Magic prediction, pick

These two Eastern Conference opponents have split their matchups on the season. Both sides entered the season with the goal of catapulting to the true championship contenders. But only the Pistons have been truly successful in this.

The Magic have been one of the more inconsistent teams in basketball all season. There have been glimpses where they look like they could make some postseason noise, but they have plenty of self-inflicted issues that show face. Orlando is just 25-33 against the spread this year, and is 12-15 ATS when playing at home. Bane has not been the lone solution to the Magic’s perimeter shooting issues, as the team still ranks 23rd in three-point attempts and 25th in three-point percentage.

In contrast, the Pistons have a clear identity and play extremely cohesive basketball. They play a hard-nosed, physical style and have one of the best defenses in the league. Detroit has won seven of its last eight games and is 15-12 against the spread when playing on the road this year.

My lean is toward Detroit’s defense really limiting this weak Orlando attack to pave the way for the game total to remain under. But I am backing the Pistons to produce the victory and cover the spread in this matchup. Banchero will not be able to lean on his size and athleticism as an advantage with the Pistons having multiple high-level defenders they will send his direction. Detroit is holding teams to the worst field goal percentage in the league, and generates the most blocks and steals. Facing a Magic team that ranks 20th in scoring and is a bit limited in its number of ball handlers, this is a massive concern.

Count on the Pistons to maintain their high standard of play and assert themselves as the better team. They have continued to impress as the season has progressed, and count on Orlando being unable to score at the rate it would require to get a victory.

Best Bet: Pistons -4.5 (-110)
