The final day of February brings a five-game NBA slate with relatively slim pickings as far as matchups go. At 3: 30 p.m. EST, the Houston Rockets head to South Beach to take on the Miami Heat. This should be a fun inter-conference clash between playoff-bound rosters, so settle in for some afternoon action.

Houston Rockets
Despite the whispers of locker-room drama and a flawed roster, the Rockets remain third in the Western Conference with a 37-21 record. They’ve largely been winning since the All-Star Game, going 4-1 over their five games with the lone loss coming at the hands of the Knicks due to a late-stage collapse. Contests against the Jazz and Kings were decided by 20+ points, but the three other outings were decided by five or fewer points.
Houston’s NETRTG of +5.8 puts the team sixth in the league, but it falls all the way to 29th in pace. The Rockets heavily lean into a defensive identity — allowing just 109.1 PPG, the third-fewest of any team with the fifth-best DEFRTG. Opponents have the fifth-lowest eFG% when playing against Houston, and the Rockets dominate the glass with an NBA-best 48.3 rebounds per game. While they score just 114.7 PPG and are poor when shooting from two-point range with the 24th-ranked 2P%, they connect at a 47.5% clip overall and 37.2% mark from three. Even when efficiency suffers and they struggle with playmaking (24.8 assists, 1.612 AST/TO ratio), they make up for it with a league-high 15.3 OREB.
Houston deploys a pair of All-Stars between Kevin Durant and Alperen Sengun. The former averages a team-best 26.1 PPG on an impressive 50.8%/40.2%/88.6% shooting split, while the latter scores 20.4 points with a team-best 9.2 rebounds and 6.4 assists per contest. Amen Thompson sits third in scoring with 17.3 points to go along with 7.6 rebounds and 5.3 dimes. Reed Sheppard and Tari Eason both provide double-digit points as well.
On the injury report, Jabari Smith Jr. (ankle) is the only notable rotation player sidelined.
Miami Heat
Meanwhile, the Heat have had some up-and-down moments since the break. While still 31-29 overall, they’re only 2-2 across their last four games since the All-Star period with wins over the Hawks and Heat before back-to-back losses at the hands of the Bucks and 76ers.
Miami is 11th in NETRTG at +2.6 and leads the entire NBA in pace. The Heat are in some ways the opposite of this Rockets team, prioritizing offensive production. They score 119.9 PPG, second-most in the league, shooting 46.3% from the field and 36.1% from beyond the arc. Miami leads the league in both FGA and FGM, pushing the tempo and looking to overwhelm opponents by sheer volume. The Heat are also seventh in assists with 28.8 and fifth in AST/TO ratio at 2.037. They rank second in rebounding with 47.3 per contest as well. Defensively, they allow 117.2 PPG (20th) but actually rank fourth in DEFRTG.
Leading scorer Norman Powell is out today, paving the way for Tyler Herro to step up. The former All-Star averages 21.2 points with 3.5 assists this season across just 15 appearances. Bam Adebayo contributes 18.5 points and a team-best 9.8 rebounds. Andrew Wiggins and Jaime Jaquez Jr. score 16.1 and 15.0 PPG, and Kel’El Ware and Pelle Larsson also pitch in double-digit points with Ware bringing in 9.3 rebounds. Davion Mitchell produces a team-high 7.0 assists, too.
Aside from Powell (groin), the Heat will be without Nikola Jovic (back).
Rockets vs. Heat pick, best bet
DraftKings Sportsbook lists the Rockets as -1.5 road favorites today with -135 odds on the Moneyline. The Heat are listed at +114 on the ML with the game total set at 226.5 combined points.
This might just be the best matchup of today’s schedule. Houston has mostly found its stride following the break and was minutes away from a five-game winning streak even despite the team’s flaws and shaky minutes for young guard Reed Sheppard, who has been quite productive when given opportunities this season. Miami hasn’t fared as well recently, but the roster does match up pretty nicely against this opponent given that it borders the top 10 in REB% and could roll out Ware for additional minutes against a dominant team on the boards.
The Heat should look to push the tempo while the Rockets try and slow things down as much as possible. Notably, Miami ranks fourth in points in the paint and fifth in fast-break points as well. Even without Powell, the Heat do have the firepower to compete today and turn this game into something of a shootout even against a tough defense. I like their chances of pushing the pace and making their opponent scale up offensive production in a high-scoring affair, so I’m targeting the over on 226.5 points.
