Through the first two-plus months of the season, the Cougars’ only loss came by two points to a top-five UConn squad. They racked up nonconference wins over Villanova, Wisconsin, Miami (FL), Dayton and Clemson, then beat up on Kansas State, Arizona State, Utah and TCU to open Big XII play. A road loss to Texas Tech sent BYU into a spiral, though, as they lost to Kansas, Houston, Oklahoma State and Arizona twice. While BYU seemingly got back on track with a 10-point win over Iowa State, they turned right around and lost by 13 to UCF on Tuesday.
The Cougars no longer have a three-headed monster to work with on offense, since Richie Saunders tore the ACL in his right knee earlier this month. The senior was averaging 18.0 points and 5.8 rebounds per game while shooting 37.6% from deep on 6.8 attempts a night. Point guard Robert Wright now runs the backcourt with 18.1 points and 4.9 assists per game with a 41.3% three-point percentage. Then there’s AJ Dybantsa, the potential No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft. He leads the country with 25.1 points per game to go along with his 6.8 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game and .532/.368/.758 shooting splits.
BYU ranks No. 21 in points, No. 31 in blocks, No. 36 in rebounds and No. 39 in field goal percentage, nationally. Defensively, they rank outside the top-200 in points allowed per game.
The Cougars rank No. 11 in the updated KenPom ratings, owning the No. 9 adjusted offense and No. 47 adjusted defense. As for the NET rankings, BYU comes in at No. 21, going 6-6 against Quad 1, 6-2 against Quad 2, 3-0 against Quad 3 and 5-0 against Quad 4. Saturday’s game at West Virginia constitutes a Quad 1 matchup.
West Virginia Preview
The Mountaineers started 5-0 with a seemingly notable win over Pittsburgh, but the Panthers turned out to be one of the worst teams in the ACC. From there, West Virginia lost its next four games to high-major opponents. They have alternated wins and losses through most of Big XII action, beating Kansas, Cincinnati and UCF while falling to Iowa State, Houston, Arizona, Baylor and Texas Tech. West Virginia has since fallen victim to a three-game losing streak, though, losing to Utah, TCU and Oklahoma State.
Former Chattanooga standout Honor Huff has led the Mountaineers with 15.2 points per game this season, attempting 9.5 three-pointers and 2.1 two-pointers per game. Jasper Floyd has handled point guard duties with 7.0 points and 3.1 assists per game, while 7-footer Harlan Obioha is putting up 5.4 points and 4.9 rebounds a night. The trio of Brenen Lorient, Treysen Eaglestaff and Chance Moore are each averaging at least 10.0 points and 4.6 rebounds per game, constituting a balanced, all-around attack for West Virginia.
The Mountaineers don’t rank particularly high in any major offensive stat, while their defense commits the 31st-fewest fouls. And while their opponents shoot an above-average 35.5% from deep, West Virginia holds teams to the 15th-lowest two-point percentage in the country.
Per the latest KenPom ratings, the Mountaineers rank No. 146 on offense, No. 23 on defense and No. 64 overall. They come in at No. 66 in the NET, going 4-7 against Quad 1, 2-4 against Quad 2, 2-1 against Quad 3 and 8-0 against Quad 4. Saturday’s game versus BYU constitutes a Quad 1 matchup.

The Mountaineers are 6-11 in Q1 and Q2 games this season, and 1-1 when those games take place at home. They have lost three straight home games to teams ranked No. 51, 15 and 116 in the NET, respectively, so BYU won’t be any easier to get through. As for the Cougars, it’s hard to take anything away from their recent two-game homestand.
