Marshall Thundering Herd vs. Georgia Southern Eagles prediction, pick for NCAAM on Friday 2/27/26

Marshall closes the regular season at home with real Sun Belt leverage still on the table, and the recent shape points toward the Herd dictating this game. Georgia Southern comes in on a three-game slide, and those last three road losses were not soft landings—64 at Georgia State, 74 at App State, 66 at James Madison. Marshall has been looser defensively than a favorite usually wants, but the home offense is still alive, and this spot asks the Herd to separate from a team whose current road floor has sagged. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for tonight’s college basketball game between the Marshall Thundering Herd and the Georgia Southern Eagles.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Marshall vs. Georgia Southern prediction, preview

Marshall is 6-4 in its last 10, scoring 81.1 points per game over that stretch, and the offense has climbed to 87.4 across the last five. Georgia Southern is 2-8 in its last 10, scoring only 72.6 per game, and that number is still just 74.0 across the last five. The road texture is even more revealing: the Eagles have scored 64 at Georgia State, 74 at App State, and 66 at James Madison in three straight road losses. That is the recent-form layer, and it matters because the season-long layer underneath still says Marshall owns the cleaner offense anyway—81.2 points per game on 46.9% shooting and 36.6% from three, compared with Georgia Southern at 79.8 points, 42.7% from the floor, and 31.9% from deep. When the team with the better baseline also owns the stronger current scoring floor, the favorite deserves real respect.

Jalen Speer is still the conductor for Marshall, sitting at 16.0 points and 5.5 assists per game, and his conference profile is even stronger at 17.9 points with 91 assists in 17 league games. That assist volume matters because it tells the truth about Marshall’s offense: the Herd do not just score more efficiently, they get there with cleaner organization and better passing. Wyatt Fricks gives them a second sturdy lane at 15.3 points and 5.6 rebounds, and he just dropped 28 on Old Dominion while shooting 12-of-17 from the floor. Noah Otshudi adds another 14.3 points, so this is not an offense that falls apart if one scorer cools for a stretch.

Georgia Southern still has plenty of individual juice—Spudd Webb at 15.6 points and 4.8 rebounds, Tyren Moore at 15.0 points with 2.9 made threes per game, Alden Applewhite at 13.0 points and 5.9 rebounds—but the recent shape of those numbers is much less comforting than the names. Moore scored 20 at James Madison and can still erupt, but it came inside a 66-point team performance. Applewhite just had 24 on 7-of-11 against App State, but that still sat inside another loss. The Eagles still have sparks. They just do not have the same teamwide offensive floor around those sparks.

Georgia Southern vs. Marshall pick, best bet

Georgia Southern already beat Marshall 101-87 in the first meeting and did it with the exact kind of volatility that makes a dog dangerous in this range. The Eagles shot 51.7% from the floor, 46.9% from three, hit 15 threes, won the glass 40-33, and got 32 points from Moore in a ceiling-script performance. That result matters because it proves the underdog does have a path if the game gets loose and the jumpers start falling. But the part that matters just as much is what has happened since. Georgia Southern has not looked remotely that explosive on this closing road stretch, and the offense has fallen back into the same problems that show up in the season-long profile: heavy three-point volume without reliable three-point accuracy, long dry spells in the half court, and too much pressure on a few guards to generate everything. Marshall, meanwhile, still got to 87 in that loss, which is the hidden lesson of the rematch. The Herd do not need to reinvent their offense to win this game. They need to defend well enough against a colder version of the same opponent.

In league play, Marshall is scoring 81.5 points per game on 47.1% shooting and 37.8% from three, while posting 16.4 assists against only 10.2 turnovers. Georgia Southern, in league play, is down to 77.6 points on 41.0% shooting and 30.4% from deep, while allowing 80.6 points, 45.0% shooting, and 35.1% from three. The home-road split adds another layer that fits the same story: Marshall is scoring 85.5 points per game at home, while Georgia Southern drops to 77.8 on the road. The rebounding lane is not some crushing Marshall advantage, but it still matters that Georgia Southern is being out-rebounded by 5.2 boards per conference game, because that becomes a real issue once the jumpers cool and the possessions stop being clean. The dog still has a live cover door through steals, foul pressure, and pure three-point volume, especially with 18.4 made free throws per conference game, but the favorite owns the more repeatable paths—better shotmaking, better ball movement, better home scoring rhythm, and fewer wasted trips.

The best bet is Marshall -7.5. All signs point toward the stronger home scoring floor, the cleaner Marshall offensive structure, and the much weaker recent road version of Georgia Southern finally mattering more than the memory of one ceiling upset. Marshall has scored at least 84 points in four of its last five. Georgia Southern has allowed at least 81 in four of its last five, and its own road offense has not looked like an 80-point unit for nearly two weeks. This is the kind of favorite-side ticket that works when the better offensive framework meets the colder, more fragile road offense at the right moment. Marshall should take control before the final ten minutes and keep enough separation to land outside the number.

Call it Marshall 86, Georgia Southern 76.

Best bet: Marshall -7.5 (-110) vs. Georgia Southern
