Iowa State walk into the Huntsman Center at 23-4 (10-4 Big 12) with a top seed story still alive and a road edge still getting tested. The Cyclones just got clipped 79-69 at BYU, and that kind of loss either sharpens the teeth or exposes the same soft spots again. Utah are 10-17 (2-12) and living on close-loss frustration, coming off the 73-71 gut punch to UCF where the Utes got 21 from Terrence Brown (G), 19 from Don McHenry (G), and 15 and 12 from Keanu Dawes (F/C) and still walked off empty. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for tonight’s college basketball game between the Utah Utes and the Iowa State Cyclones.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
Utah vs. Iowa State prediction, preview
Iowa State live around 70.0 possessions and Utah around 71.1, so the trip count is already there. The bigger point is that Iowa State’s offense is not a side character, sitting at 1.187 points per possession with a 57.8% eFG and 39.6% from three. The ball moves too, with 17.9 assists per game, so this is layered scoring, not one guy bailing water. Utah’s defense has been a leak, allowing 78.4 per night, and the open-floor numbers are worse, giving up 1.13 PPP in transition. That’s the cleanest over lane in the sport: pressure creates runouts, runouts create layups, and layups create foul shots.
Tamin Lipsey (G) is just about the best point guard in the nation at leading his team in the halfcourt—at 13.3 points, 5.2 assists, and 2.2 steals, and he just hung 19 on BYU when the game tilted. Joshua Jefferson (F) is the connector who keeps possessions alive, at 16.4 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 5.3 assists, and that passing is how Iowa State punish an over-rotating shell. Milan Momcilovic (F) warps coverage like the science-fiction shooter he is, at 17.5 points and 50.8% from three, which drags help out of the paint and opens the rim runs. Utah’s counter is not imaginary. Terrence Brown (G) lives in the midrange and the foul line, sitting at 20.2 points with 20+in 16 games, and he just scored 21 in that UCF loss. Don McHenry (G) adds 17.4 with real shooting juice, and he just posted 19 versus UCF, which matters against a defense that blitzes and can leave weak-side windows. Keanu Dawes (F/C) is the stability valve at 12.6 points and 9.2 rebounds, and his 15 and 12 versus UCF is the exact footprint that keeps Utah from faceplanting.
Iowa State vs. Utah pick, best bet
Iowa State’s defense is elite and it travels. They sit at 0.931 defensive points per possession and allow 65.1 per game, and the pressure is constant with a 19.1% forced turnover rate and 11.1% steals per play. Utah’s offense is ball-screen heavy, and Iowa State’s blitzes are designed to make that first read feel like a trap door. If Utah gets sped into giveaways and ends up in the low 60s, the over needs Iowa State to carry the whole suitcase. Iowa State can do that against this defense, because the shot quality is strong and the second-chance lane is real, with 33.9 ORB% against a Utah defense allowing 29.3% opponent offensive rebounds. The danger is the blowout coast plus missed free points, because Iowa State sit at 67.0% at the line, and empty trips at the stripe are a total killer.
The spot still favors points, even with all that defensive fear in the room. Iowa State are coming off a road game where the physicality beat them, and that usually shows up as sharper ball pressure and quicker early offense. That translates into more live-ball events and more transition possessions before Utah can get organized. Utah’s last few weeks have been competitive, and competitive teams keep firing at home instead of bleeding out. That translates into more threes early, more contact hunting late, and more late-game fouling if the margin sits around ten. Even the matchup geography helps, because this is a short Mountain trip after BYU, not a cross-country dead-leg spot. That translates into pace staying honest instead of turning into a walk-it-up grind.
The board is over 142.5 (-112), and I’m playing it to 144.5. Iowa State’s offense profile—1.187 PPP, 57.8% eFG, 39.6% from three—is built to score into the high 70s against a defense allowing 78.4. Utah have enough creators to push into the mid-60s if Brown and McHenry solve a few blitzes and Dawes keeps the paint from collapsing. One thing that can beat this ticket is a Utah turnover avalanche that turns the second half into long, empty possessions, because then Iowa State can win while bleeding clock.
Best bet: over 142.5, playable to 144.5. Projected score: Iowa State 80, Utah 67.
Best bet: Utah vs. Iowa State o142.5 total points (-110)
