Southland Monday night in Beaumont, with both teams dragging a little baggage into a rematch. Lamar Cardinals are 12-16 and have been stuck in a five-game skid, while Nicholls State Colonels are 11-17 and have dropped four of five. The first meeting ran hot and loud, but the new number is tighter and the total has slid into the mid-140s for a reason. This feels like a game where every empty trip matters, not one where points come easy on autopilot. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for tonight’s college basketball game between the Lamar Cardinals and the Nicholls State Colonels.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
Lamar vs. Nicholls State prediction, preview
Lamar sit at 64.9 Adjusted Tempo, Nicholls State at 68.4, so the baseline lives in a medium band rather than a pure track meet. Lamar’s offense is inefficient by profile, sitting at 48.5 eFG%, and it leans on farther twos at a 33.6% share while converting only 39.9% on those looks. Nicholls State score a bit cleaner at 51.6 eFG%, but the defense is the leak, allowing 55.5 eFG% and getting carved on close twos at a 64.4% clip on a massive 42.7% share. The problem for a full-game under is that the bonus can warp everything: Lamar’s own free-throw rate is only 29.0, but they allow a massive 45.3 FTRD, which can turn a quiet half into a parade.
Rob Lee Jr. is the cleanest half-court stabilizer on the floor, carrying 26.0 usage with a 114.8 offensive rating, only 12.7 TO%, and .818 at the stripe, which keeps Lamar’s offense from fully dissolving. Andrew Holifield brings rim events and late-game cash, with a 7.3 BLK% and .822 free throws while living in a foul-draw lane of his own. Braden East is the possession engine, 26.6 usage with a monster 13.8 OR% and 30.9 DR%, plus .726 free throws, and his availability swings whether Lamar can win with putbacks or has to settle for those farther twos.
On the other side, Jalik Dunkley is a constant stressor because he earns contact at a 64.8 free-throw rate and finishes efficiently at 60.5 eFG%, but the 51.5% at the line leaves points on the floor late. Sincere Malone is the two-way connector, 110.3 offensive rating and 61.2 TS% with a 3.4 STL%, while Trae English drives creation at a 22.3 AST% and pressure at a 3.5 STL%, even if the shooting efficiency sits in a fragile band. Zee Hamoda just showed the ceiling, dropping 24 in the 81-78 loss to Stephen F. Austin while Nicholls State shot 54% from the field, 50% from three, and 82% at the line, which is the reminder that the offense can spike when the threes land.
Nicholls State vs. Lamar pick, best bet
This matchup does have built-in over angles, and pretending otherwise is how totals die. Nicholls State take threes at a 43.9% rate, and Lamar’s defense allows threes at 36.0% on a 37.1% share, so a normal volume night can still become a math problem. The first meeting also got out of hand because Lamar hit 10-of-16 from deep on the way to 90 points, and that kind of heater can torch any under before halftime. But the under case is that those spikes are not a stable plan, and Lamar’s day-to-day offense still starts from 48.5 eFG% and that farther-two diet. Add in Dunkley’s free-throw leak, plus Lamar’s low self-generated free-throw rate at 29.0, and there are real paths where fouls happen without fully converting into points.
Context matters here because spots and emotions change shot selection and pace. Senior-night energy at home tends to tighten defensive urgency early, which often shows up as longer possessions and more set-piece half-court basketball rather than free-flowing transition. A rematch also reduces the surprise factor, and that usually means fewer easy early buckets because both staffs know where the first punches come from. If East is limited again, Lamar’s separation shifts from relentless second-chance volume to more Lee-driven half-court creation, and that typically slows the game’s scoring rhythm. Nicholls State’s best counter is still pressure, but pressure only turns into points if it becomes clean runouts instead of empty chaos.
The best bet is under 144.5 (-105), playable to 143.5. The number is asking for sustained shotmaking and sustained conversion at the line, and this game’s most repeatable traits are Lamar’s slower tempo, Lamar’s inefficient shot mix, and Nicholls State’s volatility-heavy rim-or-three profile. One thing that can beat this ticket is a turnover-and-whistle combo that creates too many free possessions and bonus points, because threes plus free throws can break a total without the pace ever truly accelerating.
Predicted score: Lamar 72, Nicholls State 70.
Best bet: Lamar vs. Nicholls State u144.5 total points (-105)
