After a couple of weeks of high-octane hockey at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy, the men’s tournament wraps up on Sunday with a matchup between bitter rivals. A rematch between the United States and Canada always seemed inevitable when these teams traveled to Milan, so it’s no wonder to see these tournament favorites square off to decide who brings home gold.

These teams haven’t yet clashed at these Winter Olympics since Team USA played in Group C and Team Canada played in Group A, but that doesn’t mean they’re unfamiliar by any means. These sides last faced off in the NHL’s 4 Nations Face-Off last around this time last year, with the Americans winning the round-robin matchup before the Canadians took home the glory in the final. Tensions flared in that matchup with fights from the moment the puck dropped, and while fisticuffs are punished more severely in IIHF competition, this will certainly be yet another edition of a heated rivalry.

Those numbers are hardly a surprise by any means. Both rosters are laden with superstar NHL players as the sport’s most elite take the ice.
Thanks to an absurd collection of top-end talent and the numerous stars surrounding them, the Canadians entered the tournament as favorites to win the gold medal. Connor McDavid and Nathan MacKinnon are clearly the two best players on the planet, and they’re joined by up-and-coming star Macklin Celebrini and stud defenseman Cale Makar as headliners. Living legend and captain Sidney Crosby’s status remains uncertain after missing the semifinals with an injury suffered in the prior game, but his name is, of course, worth mentioning. After a dominant run in the Group Stages, Canada’s odds to win the whole tournament saw a bump from +115 to -140.
As for the Americans, they’re no slouches either. The USA arrived in Italy with the second-best odds to win gold at +175. Despite emerging from the Group Stage undefeated after strong play, the odds shifted just slightly back to +200 due to the Canadian team’s own dominance. Brothers Quinn and Jack Hughes are leading the way in scoring for the United States, with contributions from another pair of siblings — Matthew and Brady Tkachuk — also making waves. One has to mention captain Auston Matthews and Jack Eichel as well, especially with them anchoring the top-six forwards. Netminder Connor Hellebuyck also leads the tournament with a .947 SV% and 1.23 GAA, once again looking like one of the top goalies in the world after a shaky NHL playoffs last year.
There’s simply no denying that these are the two best teams in hockey. Now, they face off with everything on the line.
