And still: Gary Antuanne Russell weathered a middle-round surge to successfully defend his WBA Super Lightweight title against Andy Hiraoka.
Russell (19–1, 17 KOs) controlled many of the early rounds before Hiraoka (24–1) came alive in the sixth and seventh — amplifying his output with a ruthless barrage of body shots.
“The Last” regrouped in the early rounds, slowly re-establishing his comfortable lead on the scorecards. Russell absorbed the lowest of low blows from Hiraoka in the 10th, which seemingly cemented the fight’s result.
10:31 p.m. ET | Frank Martin vs. Nahir Albright ends in a Draw (95–95, 95–95, 95–95)
Nahir Albright landed the biggest shot of the night when it mattered most, evening up the scorecards after 10 rounds to secure a draw in an exciting super lightweight duel with Frank Martin.
The fight remained evenly matched early on, but Martin settled in across the fifth and sixth rounds — picking his spots with calculated precision.
Albright answered in the following two frames, landing the better shots in a chaotic seventh before finding a home for his straight right in the eighth.
Still down on the cards heading into the final round, Albright came out aggressive and clocked Martin early. He nearly finished the fight, landing 19 power punches in the 10th, but couldn’t hold onto his mouthpiece and ran out of time.
9:13 p.m. ET | Bektemir Melikuziev def. Sena Agbeko via 7th Round TKO
Super middleweight Bektemir Melikuziev chipped away at Sena Agbeko to the point of systematic breakdown, securing a TKO victory in the seventh round.
Melikuziev (17–1, 11 KOs) out-landed Agbeko (29–5) 117–29 in power punches and ambushed his opponent’s body throughout.
The “Bully” stunned Agbeko in the third, and after playing with his food for a while, finally dropped him with a left hand in the seventh. Agbeko answered the ten-count, but Melikuziev immediately followed up with another left hand which prompted the referee to stop to the contest.
8:21 p.m. ET | Amari Jones def. Luis Arias via TKO (Corner Retirement)
Surging middleweight Amari Jones improved to 16–0 (14 KOs) with a TKO victory over Luis Arias in between Rounds 4 and 5.
Jones, 23, employed his speed and athleticism to suffocate the 35-year-old veteran, out-striking Arias 81-32 in power punches. The No. 13-ranked IBF middleweight dropped Arias in the second round with a short left hook — then once more in the fourth.
Arias’ camp had seen enough in between rounds, calling for a stop to the contest ahead of the fifth.
