Duke vs. Michigan College Basketball prediction, preview

Saturday night brings us a tremendous one on the college hoops card. A rematch of the 1992 National Championship Game, and a potential preview of the 2026 Natty, as Duke and Michigan meet for a non-conference heavyweight battle on a neutral floor in Washington, D.C.

These are the top-two teams in the country, according to KenPom, with Michigan sitting atop the rankings. These are also the top-two defensive teams in the country, per KenPom, with the Wolverines slightly ahead of the Blue Devils. While both are among the elite offenses in the country, Michigan also has the edge there, ranking fourth on KenPom, versus seventh for Duke.

The pace of this game will be interesting, and potentially a determining factor. The Wolverines like to play at one of the fastest adjusted tempos in the country (12th), while the Blue Devils will try to slow things down (270th). Earlier in the season in a non-conference game on a neutral floor against Gonzaga, we saw Michigan push the pace and drop 101 points. But the Wolverines were also able to lock down defensively and limit the Zags to just 61 points.

This will be Michigan’s fifth neutral game of the season, and it has been beyond dominant in the previous four. The Wolverines won all four games by an average of more than 27 points per, covering by 22 points per game — the Gonzaga matchup being the most impressive of the bunch.

Duke is a terrific team, but I’m expecting the experience and depth of Michigan to be what decides the game. The Wolverines come with a lot more experience, and can rotate more bodies in if they plan to push the pace. If Duke has any foul trouble in the front court in this game, it would really hurt the Blue Devils’ chances. The matchup reminds me a bit of the Texas Tech game that Duke lost on a neutral floor earlier this season, but the Wolverines have both more talent and depth compared to the Red Raiders.

Duke’s going to want to slow this one down, I’m just not sure it’ll be able to. Give me Michigan to come out of this one with the win.

CBB Pick: Michigan ML (-142)
