San Diego State comes in 18-7 and 12-3 in league play, but it is off a 73-63 loss to Grand Canyon. Colorado State is 16-10 and 7-8, and it just won 91-86 against UNLV with the offense humming. The board is tight at San Diego State -2.5 (-108) with 138.5 and a -142 moneyline; another tight one on this absolutely sparkling Saturday college hoops cad. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for tonight’s college basketball game between Colorado State Rams and the San Diego State Aztecs.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
Colorado State vs. San Diego State prediction, preview
CSU sits at 118.3 AdjO with a 58.4% eFG, a 57.7% two-point clip, and 39.4% from three while taking threes on 48.3% of attempts. They also live slow at 62.4 adjusted tempo, so every clean look is amplified. San Diego State’s rebuttal is defensive teeth: 94.0 AdjD, 47.4% eFG allowed, and a 21.5% turnover-creation rate that can steal two or three possessions without needing a heater. The key lane is at the rim, because SDSU finish close twos at 65.8% and CSU’s close-two defense is sitting at 62.9% allowed. That is how a slow game still tilts favorite if the Aztecs keep getting the same shot.
Roster advantage has this leaning SDSU even without a pace edge. Miles Byrd is the two-way heartbeat, and his profile is built for grind games: 21.4% usage, 18.2% assist rate, plus a nasty disruption combo at 4.3% steals and 5.9% blocks. BJ Davis is the pressure-release valve at 23.7% usage with a 115.8 offensive rating, and he gets to the line like a grown-up at 69-of-81. Pharaoh Compton is the rim-finisher who makes the paint math real: 129.2 ORtg, 75.2% eFG, and a 9.0% block rate on the other end. Colorado State has real answers, starting with Jevin Muniz running the whole ecosystem at a 126.4 ORtg and 29.1% assist rate. Kyle Jorgensen brings true efficiency pop at a 127.1 ORtg and 67.6% TS, and Carey Booth carries a 54.4 free-throw rate that can keep the dog attached when shots go cold.
San Diego State vs. Colorado State pick, best bet
Three volume is a real cover path: CSU take 48.3% of shots from three, and SDSU concede a massive 48.1% opponent three-shot share, so the Rams can swing this with two catch-and-shoot bursts. Second, the whistle is live both ways, with free-throw rates sitting at 39.6 for CSU and 36.7 for SDSU, and late bonus minutes can wreck a clean possession handicap. The reason I still land on SDSU is that the Aztecs pair that permissive three-share with actual shot suppression, holding opponents to 32.4% from three and 46.3% on twos, and CSU do not create chaos back, with only a 14.8% turnover-creation rate. That combination matters in a -2.5 game, because it reduces the empty-trip volatility that usually saves home dogs.
The spot and the history give the handicap a warning label and a roadmap. The first meeting was a 73-50 SDSU win that was basically even for a half, then turned into a 40-23 second-half avalanche with a 30-14 paint edge and a 32-24 rebounding win. That is the exact script this spread is pricing: CSU’s threes keep it close early, then the Aztecs stack stops and turn close twos into layups and free throws. The only real personnel volatility is availability: Magoon Gwath and Elzie Harrington are listed questionable for SDSU, and Josh Pascarelli is questionable for CSU. If Gwath sits, rim deterrence softens and the underdog’s paint-touch equity rises. If Pascarelli is limited, one of CSU’s spacing levers gets muted and the Rams’ three-heavy plan gets harder to sustain.
The best bet is San Diego State -2.5 (-108), playable to -3. The Aztecs have the cleaner repeatable edges: 94.0 AdjD with 21.5% turnover creation, plus a 65.8% close-two finish into a CSU defense that bleeds 54.3% on twos. If the number ever drifts, the moneyline at -142 is the safety valve for late whistle noise. The total at 138.5 is a pass for best-bet purposes because CSU’s 62.4 tempo pulls down, but the free-throw rates pull up, and that is a fragile mix. One thing that can beat this bet is a Rams three-point heater on high volume while the finish turns into a parade at the stripe.
Prediction: San Diego State 72, Colorado State 66.
