Drexel walks into Boston with legit CAA posture, sitting 13–14 overall and 7–7 in league play, the exact record line where every road game either sharpens the campaign or cracks it. Northeastern is 6–18 and 2–11 in the CAA, dragging a seven-game losing streak into a home floor that’s been unforgiving lately. Drexel just lost 72–69 at Stony Brook after getting smashed 93–73 by Monmouth, so the urgency is loud and immediate. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for tonight’s college basketball game between the South Alabama Jaguars and the Texas State Bobcats.

South Alabama vs. Texas State prediction, preview
Texas State is living off a manufacture-shots profile: 36.1 rebounds per game with a +5.1 margin, 8.8 steals per game, and 15.6 points-off-turnovers per night. They score 74.4 per game on .470 shooting and close at .761 at the stripe, which keeps the floor from collapsing. South Alabama’s counter is adult-possession basketball: only 8.7 turnovers per game with a +4.0 margin, plus 14.9 points-off-turnovers while holding opponents to .385 shooting. The Jaguars also win the whistle math in volume, with 606 free-throw attempts on the season, while opponents have only 358 attempts. Every trip is the same argument: Texas State wants second-chance scraps and runout points, South Alabama wants one shot and a dead ball.
Chaze Harris is South Alabama’s scoring thermostat at 18.7 points and 4.7 assists per game on .543 shooting, and his league-play jump is real at 22.4 points on .577 in conference. Adam Olsen is the spacing blade at 16.2 per game with 81 made threes and an .830 free-throw clip, so the help decisions get punished. Texas State answers with DJ Hall as the possession bully: 15.0 points, 7.4 boards, .554 from the field, .795 at the line, plus 40 blocks and 51 steals that turn stops into points. Mark Drone adds 13.9 per game as the midrange stabilizer, and Kaden Gumbs brings the perimeter pop at .459 from three with 55 steals to keep the pressure honest. This matchup already proved it can live in the mud, too: Texas State beat South Alabama 67-65 on Dec. 20 with Hall scoring 15.
Texas State vs. South Alabama pick, best bet
South Alabama doesn’t give away free points, and Texas State can foul its way into trouble. South Alabama draws a 0.395 FTA/FGA rate (top-100) while Texas State allows a 0.379 opponent FTA/FGA rate, and that’s a direct line to a late margin that doesn’t care about shot quality. On top of that, Texas State’s 16.1% turnover rate is bottom-third nationally, and South Alabama’s whole identity is making opponents finish possessions without gifts. If this turns into a whistle-and-clean-possessions game, +4.5 can get bled out without any dramatic swing.
The spot fits the number, but it also explains why the dog has air. Texas State’s current run isn’t thin; they’ve been scoring in bunches with a 95–84 win over ULM and a 77–71 win over Georgia Southern in this stretch. That form matters because it raises the scoring floor when the road legs hit. South Alabama just got forced into overtime to survive Arkansas State, then dropped an 84–80 game at Marshall where Marshall hit 18 threes, which can leave a team chasing “control” in the next one. When a home favorite tightens to protect the arc, it usually shows up as longer closeouts, more rebounds, and more physical possessions—exactly the kind of environment where an offensive-rebounding dog can stay attached.
I’m taking Texas State +4.5, playable to +3.5. The bet is that the Bobcats’ extra-shot profile travels: 32.3% on the offensive glass and 8.3 steals per game can keep the scoreboard breathing even when the half-court gets sticky. One thing that can beat this bet is South Alabama owning the free-throw gap, because they earn trips (0.395 FTA/FGA) and almost never donate them (0.227 opponent FTA/FGA).
