Mississippi State Bulldogs vs. Auburn Tigers prediction, pick for NCAAM on Wednesday 2/18/26

Auburn walk into Starkville with the record pressure of a team that scores like a contender and defends like a problem. Mississippi State have lived on the wrong side of the SEC table, but they just reminded everyone what their ceiling looks like when the shotmaking wakes up. Auburn sit 14-11 with a 5-7 league mark and have dropped four straight, while Mississippi State are 12-13 and 4-8 after snapping a brutal stretch by beating Ole Miss 90-78. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for tonight’s college basketball game between the Mississippi State Bulldogs and the Auburn Tigers.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Mississippi State vs. Auburn prediction, preview

This game lives in a typical SEC tempo band: Auburn sit at 72.4 possessions per game (94th), and Mississippi State sit even faster at 73.8 (49th). That matters because neither side consistently ends trips early. Auburn protect possessions at an elite clip with an 11.9% turnovers-per-play rate (17th), and Mississippi State are the opposite kind of over-helper because they almost never steal the ball—opponents turn it over only 11.1% of the time against them (359th). So the flow leans toward shots, rebounds, and free throws, not dead possessions. Mississippi State also allow shot volume in a way that hides inside pretty opponent shooting numbers: they give up 64.7 opponent FGA per game (359th), yet still hold opponents to 48.8% opponent eFG (67th) and 30.4% opponent three-point shooting (29th).

Auburn’s own scoring engine is national-level because it stacks free points on top of threes: 27.7 free-throw attempts per game (third), 20.6 made free throws per game (first), and a 0.458 FTA per FGA profile (fifth). Even when the jumper runs warm, it’s consequential volume too—Auburn make 11.2 threes per game (11th) on 36.0% shooting (78th). And when the game gets grimy, Auburn still manufacture extra shots: 34.7% offensive rebounding (15th) and 12.8 offensive boards per game (16th). The defensive backdrop keeps the scoreboard breathing as well, because Auburn’s stops haven’t been clean—1.09 opponent points per play (267th) with a 53.0% opponent eFG allowed (259th) and 35.7% opponent three-point shooting allowed (278th). If Mississippi State simply shoot like a normal team instead of a cold one, the math doesn’t need miracles.

Mississippi State’s whole offense bends around Josh Hubbard: 21.4 points per game, 11th-nationally, with 3.6 assists as the secondary stabilizer when defenses overplay him. Even if Mississippi State’s shot-making remains wobbly on the season (48.2% eFG, 295th; 31.3% from three, 306th), they still take threes at a fearless clip (24.6 attempts per game, 128th), and pace keeps those misses from becoming total killers because Mississippi State rebound at a high volume (39.8 per game, 19th) while also allowing opponents to rebound plenty (38.0, 331st), which can turn one possession into two in a hurry. The quiet counterweight is foul texture—Mississippi State don’t foul much (15.9 personal fouls per game, 50th; 19.0% personal fouls per play, 20th), so the cleanest over path comes less from a parade and more from shot volume plus Auburn’s ability to score efficiently inside the arc and then cash late points at the stripe when the game finally tightens.

The records also frame urgency on both sides: Auburn are 14-11 overall and 5-7 in the SEC, Mississippi State are 12-13 and 4-8, so this isn’t a sleepy midweek—both are fighting to keep their season posture from tilting into desperation.

Auburn vs. Mississippi State pick, best bet

My fear is what always haunts numbers in the mid-150s: one team decides the game should be ugly, the threes stop falling, and the shot quality turns into a parade of long twos. Mississippi State’s season baseline shooting sits at 44.7% from the field and 31.3% from three, so if Hubbard’s heater cools and the Bulldogs don’t get easy runouts, the total can stall into the low-150s. Auburn also have a historical dead possession risk when the ball sticks, because the defense never bails them out with free turnovers, so missed shots can turn into long, quiet stretches instead of quick points.

The spot still screams points because both teams’ current emotional posture pushes toward urgency offense. Mississippi State just snapped an eight-losses-in-nine skid, and those teams usually come out hunting shots early while the confidence is fresh. Auburn have been losing with their defense, which tends to produce an aggressive scoring posture on the road—more early-clock threes, more rim attacks, more answer-back possessions instead of walking it up. That same Starkville home-floor edge can juice the whistle, and when Auburn already live at the line, the last six minutes can turn into free points instead of empty sets.

The board asks Auburn -5.5 (-108) with a total of 155.5 (-108), and the cleanest edge on this menu is the points. Best bet is Over 155.5 (-108), playable to 156.5. The side has too much spread volatility in a game where both defenses can swing wildly night to night, but the total has multiple ways to get fed: pace, leaky per-possession defense, and a plausible foul-scoring lane.

Predicted score: Auburn 84, Mississippi State 79.

Best bet: Mississippi State vs. Auburn o155.5 total points (-105)
