Matchday 8 in the Champions League League Phase was a roller-coaster for most teams, but it hardly could’ve been more of one for Club Brugge. The Belgian outfit was one of three teams to climb out of the elimination places prior to the final match to ultimately qualify for the Knockout Playoffs.
Blau-Zwart’s reward is a matchup against Atlético Madrid. The first leg of the tie will begin at 3 p.m. ET today (9 p.m. local) in Belgium, with a return leg scheduled for 12:45 p.m. ET (6:45 p.m. local) next Tuesday in Madrid.

Club Brugge vs. Atletico Madrid prediction, pick
Atleti was pretty inconsistent in the League Phase, losing to both of the Premier League teams it faced, but even after drawing to Galatasaray in Istanbul, it still had a real chance of securing a top-eight spot heading into its final match against Bodø/Glimt. The Norwegian outfit’s shock win condemned Los Colchoneros to the Knockout Playoffs, which they managed to avoid last season. Meanwhile, Blau-Zwart looked certain to be eliminated after it lost four of its first six matches, but a comfortable win against bottom-feeders Kairat Almaty and a somewhat surprising 3-0 result against French side Marseille were enough to send Club Brugge through, ultimately at Marseille’s expense. It’s the second consecutive season in which Blau-Zwart has played in the Knockout Playoffs; it managed a win against Atalanta at this stage in 2024-25.
This edition of Club Brugge is still a veteran-led squad highlighted by Hans Vanaken, but it has plenty of young talent, with 20-year-old Aleksandar Stanković, 21-year-old Carlos Forbs, 21-year-old Nicolo Tresoldi, 22-year-old Romeo Vermant, and 20-year-old Mamadou Diakhon netting two goals each in the Champions League. All in all, Blau-Zwart’s youngsters have contributed to an average attack, ranking 19th in expected goals in the League Phase. Brugge has made the most of its opportunities, ranking 10th in goals minus expected goals and seventh in expected goals per shot. Defensively, though, it’s been a struggle; Blau-Zwart has allowed the eighth-most goals and the seventh-most expected goals and has gotten lucky not to have given up even more, given that its opponents have found the woodwork a competition-high seven times. Brugge’s defensive numbers aren’t all bad — it has allowed shots in the box at the fifth-lowest rate and ranks 10th in ground duel win rate — but ranking dead last in interceptions could be a problem.
Meanwhile, Atlético has a new face leading its line. Los Colchoneros already had a pretty potent attack during the League Phase, as Julián Álvarez had four goals and Marcos Llorente had three. Now, they’ve added Ademola Lookman, Atalanta’s hero from the 2024 Europa League final, and he both scored and assisted in Atletico’s 4-0 semifinal win over Barcelona in the Copa del Rey. Even without Lookman, Los Colchoneros ranked a solid 10th in expected goals during the League Phase, and they were clinical in front of net, smashing home 2.4 more goals than expected based on the chances they produced. But Atleti wasn’t great defensively, either, ranking 13th-to-last in both expected goals and ground duel win rate. It was also vulnerable against set-pieces, allowing the second-most goals in such situations.
Blau-Zwart, which ranks ninth-to-last in time of possession, will have to sit back and strike on the counter against a squad that likes to control the pace. That’s a style that could suit Brugge well, given that it ranked second in direct attacks. However, the Spanish side has been pretty good against direct attacks, not allowing a single goal from 15 fast-breaks, and Blau-Zwart hasn’t been very good at generating chances from set-pieces. In combination, that should be enough for Los Colchoneros to take a lead back to the Estadio Metropolitano.
