Star Wars returns to the big screen on May 22, 2026, with The Mandalorian and Grogu. And after a brief amuse-bouche during the Super Bowl, Lucasfilm — now led by Mandalorian and Grogu co-writer Dave Filoni — has begun the hype cycle for the new film starring our Clan of Two in earnest.

What Happened In The Mandalorian and Grogu Trailer?
When we last saw Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and Grogu at the end of the third season of The Mandalorian, they had appeared to have settled on a plot of land gifted to them by their friend Greef Karga after helping Bo-Katan Kryze reclaim Mandalore from Moff Gideon. It seemed like the Clan of Two was about to settle down for a quieter life.
Clearly, something has changed. Mando is back to his bounty hunter roots here, promising to take out all the gangsters and war criminals (aka the Imperial Remnant) in an unseen New Republic official’s deck of cards. Perhaps the Imperial Remnant is back hunting Grogu — after all, they brought Mando and Grogu together when the Client commissioned Mando to find the being then known only as Baby Yoda way back in Season 1 of The Mandalorian.
No matter the reason, it’s clear that Mando and his ward are primed and ready for action — whether it be fighting Hutts, using a flamethrower to help distract and then ruthlessly and efficiently take out Snowtroopers or destroy a mouse droid with only the Force. But for Sigourney Weaver’s Colonel Ward and the New Republic the fight isn’t about revenge, it’s about preventing another war. Which makes one wonder where exactly in the timeline this movie falls. We obviously know it is set post-Return of the Jedi and during the era of the New Republic, but does it come after Grand Admiral Thrawn was able to make his return in the Ahsoka series? If so, that explains why Ward is so set on preventing another war and why Mando might suddenly have increased urgency to take out any enemies who could be coming for Grogu.
In addition to his role as a bounty hunter, we’re reminded of Mando’s role as basically a father, with the Hutts threatening not only Mando’s life but that of Grogu. We see Mando’s protective dad side, telling Grogu to make sure to check his armor before going into harm’s way and worrying what will become of him long after he’s gone and can’t protect him any longer. And of course, he can’t let the little guy spoil his appetite before dinner.
This trailer has everything a Star Wars fan could want. We get the action of Mando going into a death match against what looks like Jeremy Allen White’s Rotta the Hutt and the adventure of returning to Coruscant and Hoth. We see old friends like Rebels‘ Zeb Orrelios (Steve Blum). Mando even gets a new Razor Crest while Grogu gets a new hover pram. And that Top Gun-style opening shot of the X-wings really gets the adrenaline pumping.
This looks like it will be the movie the fans have been waiting for.
