San Diego State Aztecs vs. Grand Canyon Antelopes prediction, pick for NCAAM on Tuesday 2/17/26

Grand Canyon and San Diego State meet again in the kind of late-night Mountain West slot that feels like a conference playoff. San Diego State sit 18–6 and 12–2 in league play, and Viejas is where they’ve been banking wins with real control. Grand Canyon are 16–9 and 9–5, and they already proved the matchup is live by taking the first meeting 70–69. The recent tape is telling on both sides: San Diego State have posted a 73–50, a 72–63, an 88–54, and a 71–57 in this last stretch, while Grand Canyon have lived in one-score margins, then spiked a real ceiling game in a 94–79 road win. This rematch has pride in it, but it also has seeding math. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for tonight’s college basketball game between the San Diego State Aztecs and the Grand Canyon Antelopes.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

SDSU vs. GCU prediction, preview

Grand Canyon are at 68.7 possessions per game and San Diego State are at 67.0, which keeps every empty trip loud. The efficiency profiles live in the same neighborhood offensively, with Grand Canyon at 109.9 and San Diego State at 110.7, but the defensive gap tilts the floor toward the home side, with San Diego State at 98.7 and Grand Canyon at 100.8. Shot quality is where this game should feel sticky: San Diego State allow a 47.7% opponent eFG, while Grand Canyon’s defense has been described as top-tier in league play, holding opponents to 31% from three and 45.5% at the rim. The possession math pushes the same direction, because San Diego State’s defensive rebounding sits at 74.6% and Grand Canyon’s is 69.4%, which can erase the extra shots Grand Canyon usually hunt with a 31.1% offensive rebounding rate. If this stays in the high-60s on possessions, the teams are going to have to earn every clean look.

Miles Byrd (G) is San Diego State’s tone-setter, carrying 29.3% usage with a 93.2 defensive rating, and he’s comfortable living in tough possessions. BJ Davis (G) is the clean spacing lever, with a 113.0 offensive rating and a 58.9% true-shooting profile, and his shot diet is built to punish one late closeout. Reese Waters (G) has the creator load too at 25.3% usage, but the 53.8% true shooting tag is why San Diego State can go cold if the jumper isn’t landing.

Grand Canyon’s answers are heavy: Jaden Henley (G) drives their offense with 28.9% usage, a 114.4 offensive rating, and a 23.6% assist rate, plus a 32.6 free-throw rate that can keep the scoreboard moving when shots dry up. Makaih Williams (G) is the perimeter partner at 24.1% usage and 60.0% true shooting with a heavy three-point diet, and Nana Owusu-Anane (F) is the grown-up possessions piece with a 14.7% offensive rebounding rate. Caleb Shaw being out matters, because his 119.4 offensive rating and 67.7% true shooting is the kind of easy-efficiency profile that stabilizes a road offense.

GCU vs. SDSU pick, best bet

I’m not laying the points here, because this is the exact kind of spread that can feel correct for thirty-five minutes and still land wrong. Both teams live in the low-30s from three at 33.8% and 31.5%, and in a rematch that already finished 70–69, one hot pocket can swing margin altogether. The other reason is the whistle lane: San Diego State do not build points at the line with a 0.242 FTA per FGA profile, but they do give opponents free points with a 35.0 opponent FT rate profile, and that combination is a real way for an underdog to hang around and for any side number to get brittle late.

So I’m putting the bet on the part of the game that should be most repeatable. San Diego State should lean into their shot suppression, finish possessions with that 74.6% defensive rebounding, and force Grand Canyon to score through bodies instead of rhythm. Grand Canyon’s best counter is paint pressure, because the 94–79 win at San Jose State came with a 54–22 paint advantage, and Henley’s foul pressure is the one stable way to keep points ticking. My best bet is under 139.5 (-118), playable to 137.5, because the pace and shot quality point to a game that lives in the high-60s on possessions and has to manufacture points. It loses if the whistle turns the second half into free points, especially with San Diego State’s opponent FT rate living at 35.0.

Predicted score: San Diego State 71, Grand Canyon 64.

Best bet: San Diego State vs. Grand Canyon u139.5 total points (-120)
