Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Three is one of the most highly-anticipated films of the year. One of the biggest storylines around the film is the potential return of Jason Momoa as Duncan Idaho.

Jason Momoa’s Duncan Idaho was one of the best characters in the first of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune films. Idaho was a great warrior and a mentor to Paul Atreides, who played an integral part in getting Atreides into the Fremen community. Idaho then sacrifices his life to save Paul Atreides and Lady Jessica towards the end of Dune.
Now, Jason Momoa himself has revealed that he will return in Dune: Part Three.
For those who have read Frank Herbert’s Dune Messiah, it is clear how Idaho is able to return despite his death in Dune. There will be no further spoilers in this article, but for those interested, there is plenty of writing on what happens in Dune Messiah. There are a lot of strange aspects of Dune Messiah, which is why many fans are uncertain that Villeneuve will be able to successfully pull off the adaptation.
However, both of the first two chapters of the trilogy have been fantastic, so there is no doubt that Villeneuve is capable of doing it one more time.

When does Dune: Part Three come out in theaters?
Dune: Part Three is slated to release on Dec. 18th, 2026. There is some uncertainty around the release, however. Avengers: Doomsday is also set to be released that same weekend. It would be a bit of a shock if two of the biggest films of the year ended up being released on the same weekend. So, there is a chance that one may see a shift in release date.

Some of the other fan-favorite characters from the first two films will be returning as well, including those played by Josh Brolin, Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem and, of course, Jason Momoa’s Duncan Idaho.
Is Dune: Part Three based on Dune Messiah?
The first two films were based on Frank Herbert’s original Dune novel. David Lynch’s Dune (1984) put the entire book into one film. However, Villeneuve opted to split the first book into two films to be able to tell more of the story. Dune: Part Three, however, will be based on the second book in the series, Dune Messiah.
