Torthern Iowa is 16-10 overall and still clawing for MVC separation at 8-7. Drake walks in at 12-15 and 6-10, carrying a month of bruises. That skid has not been quiet; the last couple weeks have looked like 80s and 90s on the scoreboard, and the defensive floor has leaked. The market is loud: -9.5 with a 137.5 total, and the ticket count is basically a chorus for the home side. That kind of ticket split usually means the room is buying home defense & margin. This is a posture game for UNI and a survival game for Drake. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for tonight’s college basketball game between the Northern Iowa Panthers and the Drake Bulldogs.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
UNI vs. Drake prediction, preview
Drake is scoring 111.6 points per 100 possessions on a 52.8% eFG, and the shot diet is all perimeter intent. UNI is allowing only 87.9 per 100 possessions, which is the kind of defense that turns spacing into hesitation. Drake’s threes make up 44.9% of its attempts, and UNI’s opponent three-point accuracy allowed sits at 27.6%. UNI’s offense is steadier than explosive at 98.4 per 100, so the blowout has to come from defense creating separation.
Drake has legit shooters. Jalen Quinn (G) is a real alpha at 19.8 points per game with a 56.9% true shooting and a bully 43.4% FTA-to-FGA rate. Eli Shetlar (F) takes 149 threes and hits 40.9%, and Andrew Alia (G) is at 42.9% from deep as a second-wave sniper. Okku Federiko (C) gives Drake the adult interior minutes: 1.1 blocks per game, plus 77 assists against 43 turnovers. UNI’s counterweight is Trey Campbell (G), who’s sitting on 98 assists and 46 steals as the two-way controller. Leon Bond III (G) brings the slashing and glass at 11.9 points and 5.5 boards, and Will Hornseth (F) is pure finishing at 60.6% from the field.
Drake vs. UNI pick, best bet
UNI’s home floor has been a real edge at 11-3, and the defense travels inside its own building. UNI’s recent form has still been defense-shaped; even when the offense wobbles, the game keeps coming back to stops and control. UNI is allowing 61.2 points per game, holding opponents to 40.5% shooting, and the crowd is getting an extra jolt today. This is the kind of place where Drake’s first five minutes matter, because UNI can turn a soft start into a 12-2 stretch that changes the math. That’s also why the number has inflated from -8 to -9.5 and why the market is leaning into UNI anyway. The counter is that Drake’s recent games have been track meets, and a track meet is where +9.5 lives. But the same UNI profile that wins games can leave spreads sweaty: a 20.8% turnover rate and 69.5% free-throw shooting create late-game mess, especially on a hook. That’s the backdoor recipe: one loose UNI possession, one quick Drake three, and suddenly the last thirty seconds are all tension. With 96% of tickets riding UNI, the price is no longer clean, and the volatility leans dog. This is a classic “great side, annoying number” spot.
I’m taking Drake +9.5 (-105), playable to +8.5. Drake has just enough scoring angles to keep the margin from breathing. UNI should win the control battle by dragging this toward its 62.2 tempo comfort, and Drake still has to solve a defense that wants every catch contested. UNI’s cover path is simple: choke the arc, force long twos, and let the crowd turn every miss into pace the other way. Drake’s cover path is cleaner than the public is admitting, because Drake plays faster at 67.5 tempo and can force extra possessions with a 27.2% offensive-rebound rate. That offensive glass lane is how a dog stays attached without shooting lights-out, because misses still become points. UNI should run Drake’s shooters off the line and make Quinn live in traffic, but Drake can still hang by winning turnovers and living at the stripe. If Quinn turns this into a whistle game, the margin gets stubborn, even if UNI controls the night. The fragility is obvious: if UNI generates live-ball takeaways early and Drake’s threes go quiet, the margin can sprint past the hook, but the best-bet process prices that failure mode into the number.
Predicted score: Northern Iowa 72, Drake 65.
Best bet: Drake +9.5 (-105) at UNI
