Well, that didn’t take long. After eight minutes of third-quarter play, Victor Wembanyama is the new King of the Court. Good luck placing a crown on his head.
Nobody in this game is even close to him. Let’s see how much his lead is padded.
Alien Arrival
Victor Wembanyama won’t be taking any hostages back to his spaceship tonight. Through 18 minutes of first-half play, Wemby put up a shocking 37 points, eight rebounds, and two assists. It’s the first instance of a player having 37 and 8 in the first half of the play-by-play era (since 1996-97).
He only has six P/R/A to go in order to catch Brunson. The Spurs aren’t fully blowing out the Lakers just yet, so it’s likely Wemby sees a good bit of action in the second half. Let’s see how long it takes him to get the top spot.
One To Go
The Mavericks managed to make the end of the game interesting, but nobody came close to challenging Jalen Brunson. That means we have one more game left for potential crown challengers. And we are on full #WembyWatch.
The San Antonio superstar already has 31 points and six rebounds midway through the second quarter. Nobody is even close to challenging that number in this game; the next-highest P/R/A total is 13. So it’s likely that it’s Wemby or Brunson.
Obviously, the pace Wemby has set is absurd. But with the Spurs up 30 in the second, it’s possible that a blowout threatens his chance at winning. But maybe he gets it by halftime at this pace.
Empty In The Valley
We’re at the end of the third quarter in Phoenix, and there are no serious challengers to be found here. Dillon Brooks, Cooper Flagg, and Naji Marshall are all having solid nights. Yet nobody is even halfway to the pace Jalen Brunson set. We can safely rule that game out of our calculus for tonight.
But we can’t rule out Victor Wembanyama. In the first four minutes against the Lakers, he’s piled up 14 points and three rebounds. That is a torrid pace. He probably won’t put up 130+ P/R/A, but hey, he does not have a ceiling.
Take a Bow, Jalen
This was one wild game. The Pacers took complete control in overtime as Jalen Brunson and the Knicks’ offense went ice cold. But Brunson managed to drag them back into range, hitting a huge three to cut the lead to one with six seconds left. Ultimately, the Knicks fell short, but Brunson had a crown-worthy performance.
With 53 P/R/A, Brunson is well clear of the field. He had 13 P/R/A more than anyone else in that game. We also got a final score in LA, as the Rockets ground down the Clippers to a low-scoring win. No player had more than 35 P/R/A in that game, compared to five players with that number in the Pacers-Knicks game.
Now we look to Phoenix, where the Suns are putting the hurt on the Mavericks. Midway through the third quarter, Dillon Brooks leads all players with 23 total P/R/A. Safe to say that game isn’t looking promising.
We have one more game on the schedule after that: Spurs vs. Lakers. With no Luka Doncic or LeBron James, a lot of the usual suspects are gone. Will Wemby wear the crown tonight? Can another surprise candidate emerge?
OT In NY
What a wild, wild finish. The Pacers fouled up three in an attempt to close the Knicks out, then missed their own free throws, and fouled Karl-Anthony Towns on a rebound at the buzzer. KAT calmly knocked down his freebies, sending this one to OT at 124-124.
Jalen Brunson continues to lead the field with 47 total P/R/A. We’re also getting great performances from Josh Hart, Pascal Siakam, and KAT. Five minutes is a short time, but we’ll see if anyone is capable of passing Brunson.
Man In The Arena
Jalen Brunson is scorching hot, folks. In a back-and-forth affair, Jalen Brunson is keeping the Knicks offense afloat with 29 points, five rebounds, and five assists as the third quarter comes to a close. He’s starting to pull away from the field.
The biggest challengers are coming from within. Josh Hart has 32 P/R/A and is nearing a triple-double. Pascal Siakam, Karl-Anthony Towns, and Mikal Bridges are playing quite well. They could have a big fourth and challenge Brunson for the top spot.
Meanwhile, our main candidates in the Clippers-Rockets game are flagging a bit. John Collins leads that group with 20 P/R/A as they come out for the second half. Gear up for a busy hour.
Light Work in the Garden
We’ve sure got a P/R/A battle on our hands in the Knicks-Pacers game. Four players are at 21+ P/R/A: Jalen Brunson, Josh Hart, Pascal Siakam, and Karl-Anthony Towns. Brunson leads the way with 22, and 20 of those are of the points variety.
There are a lot of good candidates in this game to lead the field. But there are some promising candidates coming from the Clippers-Rockets game, as Jabari Smith Jr. and Kevin Durant are off to great starts. What’s in store for us in the second half at the Garden?
Dogfight at MSG
Pascal Siakam continues to show out and has the top spot on the leaderboard. But there are plenty of good performers in this Knicks-Pacers game.
Five total players have 12+ P/R/A alongside Siakam: Mikal Bridges, Jalen Brunson, Andrew Nembhard, and Josh Hart. All of those players know how to stuff the stat sheet. We could be in for a big night at Madison Square Garden.
Pascal Showing Out
Breaking news: the Knicks still can’t guard Pascal Siakam. After the All-Star forward tortured them in the Eastern Conference Finals last season, he’s continuing his run tonight. Siakam has 13 P/R/A (10 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist) through the first seven minutes of the game.
In a field that feels awfully wide open tonight, a guy like Siakam can reach the top with a big scoring game. Let’s see if he can keep this up.
