After last week’s WM Phoenix Open provided the first playoff and the first multiple-event winner of the season, the PGA TOUR has two Signature Events lined up to wrap up the West Coast Swing before heading to Florida. This week’s Pebble Beach Pro-Am will take place at Pebble Beach Golf Links and Spyglass Hill Golf Course on California’s Monterey Peninsula just ouside Carmel, CA.
Let’s start the week with a look at the format, history and courses in play at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am this week.
The Format of AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am
Since this is a Signature Event, it has a limited field with just the top golfers on the PGA TOUR teeing it up this week. The field includes 80 players who earned their way in with a good finish in the 2025 FedExCup standings, a fast start to 2026 via the Aon Swing 5, or via sponsor exemption.
In this unique Pro-Am format, the 80 professionals tee it up alongside 80 amateurs for the first two rounds, playing one round at Pebble Beach and one at Spyglass Hill. While there is no cut after Round 2, the amateur portion of the event is over and the 80 pros move to Pebble Beach for Round 3 and Round 4.
The history of the tournament
The AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am started all the way back in 1937 as The Crosby Clambake. Los Angeles celebrity and avid golfer Bing Crosby hosted the event for many years, merging some of the biggest names in Hollywood and other sports with the best players on the PGA TOUR.
The Crosby family continued to host the event for eight years after Bing Crosby passed away in 1977. In 1986, AT&T became the title sponsor and has been for the last 40 years.
The format previously included a full field of 156 professionals on a three-course rotation. It had a cut after Round 3, similar to The American Express earlier this season. Since 2024, though, its status as a Signature Event has led to a reduced field and a more focused weekend with only pros on Pebble Beach as the focus. Monterey Peninsula Country Club was dropped from the course rotation as well.
In 2024, Wyndham Clark won the first Signature Event at Pebble Beach, winning in a rain-shortened event with a record-breaking round on Saturday. Last year, it was Rory McIlroy who took home the title. Six different players held at least a share of the lead on Sunday, but Rory’s clutch birdie on No. 10 and eagle on No. 14 helped him claim a two-stroke win over Shane Lowry.
Both Lowry and Rory are in the field this week, making their first PGA TOUR appearance of 2026. They’ll be joined in their debut by Tommy Fleetwood, the reigning FedExCup Champion.

The Signature Event draws an elite field due to the prestige of the event and the course, along with an elevated purse of $20 million up for grabs. The winner will claim a $3.6 million payday.
A Closer Look at the Course
Both of the two courses used this week are exposed along the Pacific Coast, giving remarkable ocean views and plenty of sunny California vibes. The weather can change in a hurry, though, and windy conditions can make both courses play difficult.
The courses are also similar in their routing and their small greens. Pebble Beach has the smallest greens of any regular PGA TOUR stop, and both courses utilize Poa annua and ryegrass blends in the fairways and rough, along with pure Poa annua greens.

The small greens make this a prototypical “second shot” course, where Strokes Gained: Approach is the stat that rules the day. Patience, pitching and putting on Poa annua greens are the characteristics required to contend this week, and typically, the leaderboard is packed with the best overall players in the game.
The shorter layout doesn’t necessarily rule out longer hitters, as Rory demonstrated, but it requires accuracy and excellent work around the green. Poa putting is a very different challenge as well, so look for players with a good history at this event or an extensive knowledge of putting on these type of greens.
