The back-and-forth in the Patriots’ running back room has been fascinating to watch. Veteran holdover Rhamondre Stevenson was placed on high alert after the selection of TreVeyon Henderson, a definite diversion in skill sets. Stevenson is often a plodding, physical back who grinds out yards with little upside for big gains. Henderson is almost the complete opposite; he breaks off explosive runs, but often fails to make consistent gains when he’s not finding a big hole.
Stevenson’s fumbling issues threatened to cost him the job outright at one point in the season. But one thing swayed the battle between the two: pass protection.
Henderson, an elite pass-protection prospect, underwhelmed as a pass protector in his first NFL campaign. It was jarring to see him suddenly lose the trust of his coaching staff, shifting the responsibilities back to Stevenson. With the Patriots dominating the regular season, there was more wiggle room to play him despite his struggles. But now that we’re in win-or-go-home time, Mike Vrabel and the Patriots staff have made it clear that they’re leaning on the vets.
Henderson’s snap shares in their three playoff games have gone from 40.6% to 38.5% to a shocking 6.3% in their AFC Championship win over the Broncos. Despite being in the snow, where an explosive run would change the game, Henderson was hardly used and garnered just three carries for five yards. It makes us wonder if Henderson can get much run at all against the Seahawks.
Sure, Henderson could break 19 yards on just a single carry. He’s done it many times. But I highly doubt the volume will be there against a fierce Seahawks pass rush. They don’t want to risk a free runner getting to Drake Maye because Henderson missed his assignment. I’m fading the rookie in this game; it’s going to be a Rhamondre-centric backfield all night long.
