The running game has been massive for Drake Maye all season long, and especially in the playoffs. He’s been under fire, facing great defenses in these playoffs, taking exactly five sacks in each of their three playoff wins. This Super Bowl will be his fourth straight matchup against a top-five defense in total yards allowed, and the Seahawks will be bringing a fierce pass rush to play.
But Maye is willing to escape and scramble to make a play. Like so many young quarterbacks, he doesn’t want to quit on the play; it results in more sacks, but it also creates many scrambling opportunities. Maye’s 10.4% scramble rate was third out of the 38 quarterbacks to get at least 200 drop-backs this season. And Maye isn’t just the kind of quarterback who has to rush outside the tackles: he’s fully capable of getting things done up the middle.
There’s also a baseline of designed quarterback runs. Bootlegs and quarterback draws are very much on the table, and Josh McDaniels will have to pull out some trickery to throw this excellent Seahawks defense off balance. It’s hard to forget the naked bootleg that sent the Patriots to the Super Bowl in the first place.
