Seattle has a great crop of receivers, and it was on full display this year. Jaxon Smith-Njigba leads the charge as one of the most target-dominant pass-catchers in the league and had the best receiving season in the NFL.
Behind JSN, the Seahawks were comfortable working a rotation between Kupp, Tory Horton, Jake Bobo, and Rashid Shaheed after the trade deadline. But now that we’re down to the real games, Klint Kubiak and the play-callers are leaning on their veterans.
Kupp received five or more targets in just five of 16 games this season. But he hit that number in both of Seattle’s playoff games so far, catching nine of 11 passes for 96 yards and a score.
When you’re in a playoff setting, you want guys who are reliably going to find themselves open. Kupp is a legendary route runner who always finds the soft spots in zone coverage and separates against man coverage. That was on full display in the NFC Championship Game against his former team.
This Patriots secondary is tough, to be sure. Christian Gonzalez is one of the top shutdown corners in the game, and Carlton Davis III is an excellent CB2. New England deploys Marcus Jones in the slot, who is an excellent athlete. But he does have one issue: he’s just 5-foot-8.
Standing 6-foot-2, Kupp can get his hands free from Jones any time he wants. That kind of advantage is going to show up when matched up in man coverage several times in this game. Count on Kupp to be a reliable security blanket and chain mover for Sam Darnold all night long.
