Sam Darnold Over 1.5 Touchdown Passes (-122)
Sam Darnold seems ready for the biggest game of his life. Darnold had an incredible regular season, finishing fifth in the league in passing yards. He won 14 games for the second straight season, joining Tom Brady as the only quarterbacks to win 14 games in back-to-back seasons. The only team that gave Sam Darnold serious trouble during the regular season was the Rams, and he got his redemption in the NFC Championship Game, throwing for nearly 350 yards and three touchdowns. Darnold should be able to have another big performance against the Patriots.
New England is elite against the run, allowing the fourth-fewest rushing yards in the NFL this season. That stout run defense has translated to the red zone as well. New England ranks 30th in opponent passing touchdown percentage. Only 32.5% of their opponent’s touchdowns have come on the ground this season. As good as their run defense is, the Patriots did give up many scores when opponents got into the red zone. They ranked 23rd in the NFL in opponent red zone touchdown percentage, giving up touchdowns on over 60% of opponents’ red zone drives. Darnold should be able to convert most of the Seahawks’ red zone trips into passing touchdowns, pushing him over 1.5 touchdown passes for Super Bowl 60.
George Holani Over 11.5 Receiving Yards (-116)
George Holani could be one of the underappreciated X-factors for the Super Bowl. Holani has less than 100 career scrimmage yards in the regular season and just one career touchdown in the NFL. However, he could play a key role in this game as the backup running back. Zach Charbonnet missed the NFC Championship Game and will miss the Super Bowl as well with an injury suffered in the Divisional Round. Charbonnet played a big part in this offense, backing up Kenneth Walker III. That RB2 role now goes to Holani for the Super Bowl.
Holani has never been able to get momentum in his NFL career. He only played five games in his rookie season due to injury, and then only played 11 games during the regular season this season due to another injury. That same injury caused him to miss the Divisional Round, but he returned for the NFC Championship Game when Seattle needed him most. It was unclear how much of a role he would play in his first game back in two months. Holani was largely ineffective on the ground, taking just three carries for four yards. However, he played a decent role in the passing game, catching three balls on four targets for 27 yards.
In the Super Bowl, the Seahawks will want Kenneth Walker III to take basically every rushing snap. However, Holani will be the man to step in on obvious passing downs and try to make some plays through the air. The Patriots are elite against the run, but ranked 24th in the league in receptions allowed per game to opposing running backs. Part of that is due to how good New England is against the rush. If Walker keeps getting stuffed, that could lead to more snaps for Holani in the passing game. In all three of New England’s postseason games so far, it has given up at least 20 receiving yards to an opposing running back. Holani should keep that trend going and replicate his performance from the NFC title game, going for at least 12 receiving yards.
AJ Barner Anytime Touchdown (+240)
AJ Barner is another unsung hero of the Seattle offense. The trio of Sam Darnold, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, and Kenneth Walker III deservedly gets a lot of praise. However, Barner has been a reliable outlet for Sam Darnold all season. He ranked second on the team in receptions and third in receiving yards during the regular season. Barner was one of Darnold’s go-to red zone targets down the stretch, hitting him for a score in two of the team’s final three games.
This is a solid matchup for Barner against the Patriots. New England gave up the 11th-most receptions to opposing tight ends this season. Additionally, they gave up 67.5% of their total touchdowns through the air. The ball should be in Sam Darnold’s hands when Seattle is in the red zone, and Barner should be able to get open to be a target for his quarterback.
There is also a chance that Barner finds the end zone on the ground. Sam Darnold is not great when it comes to the QB sneak. Consequently, the Seahawks have used Barner in the quarterback role of a sneak situation multiple times this season. Barner has 10 carries on the season, all in sneak situations. One of those carries went for a touchdown. While it’s unlikely to happen in this game, that is one extra reason to like Barner to find the end zone in Super Bowl 60.
