When Super Bowl LX kicks off in San Francisco on Sunday, February 8, the teams might look familiar. In fact, both the Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots have been among the defining teams of the 21st Century, with each recording multiple Super Bowl appearances.
While the Patriots have made the Super Bowl three additional times since the Seahawks’ most recent appearance, they should look pretty familiar to Seattle, too, as the last time the Seahawks played for the Lombardi Trophy, New England opposed them and won in a 28-24 thriller on February 1, 2015.
At that time, Seattle was chasing its second consecutive Super Bowl title after defeating the Denver Broncos, 43-8, the season before. The Patriots, meanwhile, were making their first appearance in the title game since 2012 and seeking their first title since 2005. The victory would ultimately go on to be the fourth of New England’s six under the Bill Belichick and Tom Brady dynasty.

That season, the Seahawks had gone 12-4 during the regular season, with third-year quarterback Russell Wilson leading the aerial attack as one of the earliest true dual-threat signal-callers and running back Marshawn Lynch leading the league in touchdowns with his power-running style. That Seattle team went on to earn the first seed in the NFC, beating the Carolina Panthers comfortably in the Divisional Round before a miraculous late comeback against the Green Bay Packers secured the NFC title.
The 2025 Seahawks are a very different team led by a very different system, but like the 2014 team, they earned the NFC’s first seed. Sam Darnold doesn’t have the mobility that a prime Wilson did, but he’s a more aggressive and more accurate passer than Wilson was with a similarly lauded deep ball. Kenneth Walker III also isn’t quite as capable of a power back as Beast Mode, but he’s proven to be a star in his own right, and Jaxon Smith-Njigba is a better receiver than any that that 2014 team had. Like Seattle’s last Super Bowl team, this season’s version is led by a dominant defense, especially against the run.
Of course, Super Bowl XLIX didn’t work out so well for the Seahawks, who were this close to becoming the first back-to-back champions since the 2004-05 Patriots. Late in that game, Pete Carroll infamously chose to have Wilson pass it on second and goal from the one-yard line instead of handing it off to Lynch — who’d already carried the ball 24 times for 102 yards and a score — and Wilson’s quick slant to Ricardo Lockette was picked off by Malcolm Butler. It was Butler’s first career interception.
Seattle fans surely hope that next Sunday’s affair will turn out better. The Seahawks are 4.5-point favorites on DraftKings Sportsbook, with the point total set to 45.5. Seattle is -230 on the Moneyline, and New England is +190.
