Oklahoma State Cowboys vs. BYU Cougars prediction, pick for NCAAM on Wednesday 2/04/26

Gallagher-Iba on a Wednesday night is the kind of room that tests whether a ranked team can stay composed when the game gets fast and loud. No. 16 BYU arrives at 17–4 and 5–3 in the Big 12, still trying to bank road wins in a league that punishes even a mild lapse. Oklahoma State is 15–6 and 3–5, and it has built its season around the home floor, where it’s been a different animal all year. That’s why this matchup reads like a season checkpoint for both sides, because the Big 12 doesn’t grade on aesthetics, only on whether you can survive pressure possessions. And with BYU carrying fresh confidence off a game where Trevin Saunders hit 33, the tone is set early: Oklahoma State has to win the first wave of physicality or watch the visitors settle into rhythm. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for tonight’s college basketball game between the Oklahoma State Cowboys and the BYU Cougars.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Oklahoma State vs. BYU prediction, preview

BYU plays at 73.5 possessions per game, Oklahoma State is even faster at 77.4, and that many trips makes clean execution matter more than “energy.” BYU’s offense grades as 1.176 points per possession, 11th nationally, while Oklahoma State sits at 1.110, still good but not quite on the same level. The shot-quality gap shows up in effective field goal rate, with BYU at 56.7% and Oklahoma State at 52.9, and the stylistic split is clean too. BYU takes 40.9% of its shots from three, while Oklahoma State leans more into twos at a 64.8% two-point attempt rate, so the game can swing between a three-point barrage and a rim-attack grind depending on who controls tempo. BYU also takes better care of the ball at a 12.8% turnover rate compared to Oklahoma State’s 14.5%, and in a high-possession game, that gap can quietly become six points.

BYU has the only true national headliner on the floor, and the math behind him is loud. A.J. Dybantsa (G) is at 23.3 points per game, third nationally in scoring, with 134 free throws made and three 30-point games, including a 43-piece against Utah. Trevin Saunders (W) is the second star at 19.5 points and 5.7 rebounds, and the profile is two-way, with 59 threes at 39.6% plus 47 steals. Matthew Wright (G) keeps the whole thing organized at 17.5 points and 5.2 assists, which is why BYU can play fast without playing sloppy. Mouhamed Keita (C) is the possession finisher at 7.8 rebounds with 36 blocks, the kind of back-line that lets BYU chase shooters aggressively. The shape is concentrated, too, with Dybantsa, Saunders, and Wright combining for 70% of BYU’s points, so every Oklahoma State rotation decision is basically a bet on which star to live with.

Oklahoma State’s counter is a real multi-guard scoring web, not a one-man act. Robert Wright III (G) is at 18.9 points and 4.6 assists, with seven 20-point games and a made three in 16 straight, which is a nightly floor you can feel. Tanner Cuff (G) is the pure shooting lever at 14.6 points on 46.5% from three, and Brandon Newman (W) is another sniper at 44.7% from deep, so BYU can’t overhelp without paying for it. Brandon Garrison (F) gives them a sturdier inside layer at 11.5 points and 7.4 rebounds with 2.5 assists, and the 18-point, ten-rebound double-double against UCF is the reminder that Oklahoma State can score without just bombing threes. Caleb Wilson (F) brings 2.0 blocks and 6.6 rebounds as the rim deterrent behind that guard attack, and Jamal Mashburn Jr. (G) at 10.2 points is one more handler who keeps the pace from stalling.

BYU vs. Oklahoma State pick, best bet

The counterargument is that Oklahoma State has a very real cover recipe, and it doesn’t require a miracle. The Cowboys get to the line more often, with a 28.0% free-throw attempt rate per play compared to BYU’s 25.1%, and that matters in a spread sitting on the hook. They also have the specific kind of shooting that can create a run fast, with Cuff at 46.5% from three and Newman at 44.7, plus Wright’s 16-game made-three streak keeping the floor spaced. If Oklahoma State avoids the empty-trip trap, the home side can keep this in the one-to-two possession range deep into the second half. The refutation is that the possession math still leans BYU, because BYU’s offensive rebounding rate is 33.0% compared to Oklahoma State’s 28.8, and those second shots are the quiet backbreaker in track-meet games. If Oklahoma State is turning it over at 14.5% and also giving up extra possessions on the glass, it needs an A+ shooting night to stay inside 7.5.

So I’m laying BYU -7.5, even with the hook risk baked in, because the offensive quality edge is paired with the cleaner possession profile. The market is also begging you to consider the over at 167.5, and the pace supports it, but the total is brittle if the turnovers turn into stretches of empty offense. The injury sheet adds a little noise, with Mihailo Boskovic questionable for BYU and Mekhi Ragland questionable for Oklahoma State, but the core engines on both sides are intact. I trust BYU to win the “good shot” war, and I trust their stars to close when the game gets tight. BYU should lean into its three-point volume early, force Oklahoma State to defend multiple shooters, then punish late closeouts with straight-line drives into free throws. Oklahoma State should try to speed it up and make this a whistle-and-runout game, but that plan gets thin if BYU keeps rebounding its misses and limiting live-ball mistakes.

BYU -7.5 is the bet. Predicted score: BYU 89, Oklahoma State 80.

Best bet: BYU -7.5 (-105) at Oklahoma State
