Minnesota Golden Gophers vs. Michigan State Spartans prediction, pick for NCAAM on Wednesday 2/04/26

February games in the Big Ten always feel like they’re being graded twice. Michigan State walks into Minneapolis at 19–3 and 9–2 in league play, sitting in the title pack with a real seed to protect. Minnesota is 10–12 at 3–8, and the seven-game skid has turned every night into survival. The number beside Michigan State’s name says top-ten, but this spot still has teeth. Minnesota has been losing close, and The Barn has a way of turning frustration into one violent early run. This is a posture game for both sides, just in different directions. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for tonight’s college basketball game between the Minnesota Golden Gophers and the Michigan State Spartans.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Minnesota vs. Michigan State prediction, preview

Michigan State’s profile is built on controlling the scoreboard: 79.1 points per game, 64.4 allowed, and a +16.0 margin that looks like a blunt instrument on paper. The efficiency split is even louder, with a +18.1 net efficiency rating versus Minnesota’s -3.8, which is the gap between a contender and a team just trying to finish possessions. The shot quality edge is steady rather than explosive—54.6% effective field goal for Michigan State against 53.0% for Minnesota—so this isn’t about one side “can’t score.” It’s about which team can string good possessions together without donating empty trips. Michigan State just lost 71–66 at Michigan, and Minnesota just lost 77–75 at Penn State, which is why the game feels tense even before the ball goes up.

This matchup has real March names in it, and the headliner is running the whole show. Jeremy Fears Jr. (G) is at 14.9 points and 8.8 assists per game, and being No. 2 nationally in assists means every defensive mistake becomes a layup or a corner three. He’s also sitting on 193 total assists already, and that kind of orchestration shows up when a favorite needs to settle the floor. Jaxon Kohler (F) brings the interior certainty at 13.1 points and 9.1 rebounds with ten double-doubles, the kind of nightly production that makes a lead feel heavier. Coen Carr (F) at 11.4 points and Carson Cooper (C) at 10.4 with 7.3 boards keep the scoring from turning into one-player roulette.

Minnesota’s lifeline is Cade Tyson (F) at 19.9 per game, third in the league, and he lives at the stripe with 132 makes on 163 attempts, which is exactly how an underdog stays attached without perfect shooting. Langston Reynolds (G) sits at 11.9 and 4.3 assists, and the thirteen-assist night in the Northwestern win is the cleanest picture of how Minnesota has to play to breathe.

Michigan State vs. Minnesota pick, best bet

The Gophers take 45.7% of their shots from three, but they only hit 32.7%, which means the game can swing from “hanging around” to “down fourteen” in two possessions. The free-throw floor is also shaky at 69.4%, and that matters late when the underdog is trying to turn stops into points. The one lever Minnesota does have for chaos is pressure, with 9.2 steals per game sitting there as the fast way to create short fields. The problem is Michigan State’s separating gear doesn’t need a heater, because the defense is built to strangle clean looks and force long possessions into late-clock decisions. When those misses turn into runouts, the underdog’s best lineups get dragged into transition defense instead of running their stuff.

So I’m laying it with Michigan State, even at -8.5, because the margin profile matches the matchup. Michigan State’s depth scoring is a real closer—35.0 bench points per game, No. 2 nationally—and 14.9 fastbreak points, No. 4, is how a good team turns a four-point game into an eleven-point game without drama. The -8.5 hook is always a little annoying, but Minnesota’s offense needs too many things to go right at once. The total at 134.5 also fits the script if Michigan State dictates possessions and Minnesota’s threes come up empty.

Michigan State 72, Minnesota 61.

Best bet: Michigan State -8.5 (-110) at Minnesota
