Origins of the Gatorade Bath
The Gatorade bath tradition began with the New York Giants in 1984 in what was described by originator Jim Burt as a motivational tool utilized by Hall of Fame coach Bill Parcells. If Burt was going to be bullied by the Tuna, he was going to take his shot at giving it back when he had the chance.
Harry Carson joined in on the fun, with Parcells noting that Carson made it a festive thing. Carson said that Parcells was very superstitious. Once it worked, it became something the team felt compelled to repeat. So as the Giants kept winning, Carson had to keep drenching the Tuna in Gatorade. It became a symbol of that Giants season.
Gatorade Bath Color History
Since 2001, Orange has been the most frequent Gatorade color to get splashed on the coach of the winning team. Orange has been the Gatorade bath color of choice five times, followed by Blue, Purple, Yellow and Clear (4 each). Last year in New Orleans at Super Bowl 59, winning coach Nick Sirianni got drenched in Yellow Gatorade after the Eagles topped the Chiefs, 40-22. Yellow had the third-best odds going into Super Bowl 59 at +350.

Since 2020, Blue and Purple have each been the Gatorade color twice, with the Chiefs going Orange in 2020 and the aforementioned Yellow bath for Sirianni last year in the Big Easy. The Patriots have gone Blue in each of the last two times they’ve partaken in the tradition (Super Bowls 53 and 49), while the Seahawks went Orange to celebrate their lone Super Bowl victory back at Super Bowl 48.
