Portland State Vikings vs. Idaho State Bengals prediction, pick for NCAAM on Monday 2/02/26

Portland State sits on top of the Big Sky, and Monday nights at The Ship have felt like business trips for visitors. The Vikings are 14–6 overall and 8–1 in league play, and this is a hold-serve spot. Idaho State walks in at 10–12, 3–6 in conference, and chasing footing after a rough stretch. The earlier meeting matters as a reference point, not a script, because the standings pressure has shifted since Jan. 4. This one plays like a conference checkpoint for Portland State, and a pride game for Idaho State. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for tonight’s college basketball game between the Portland State Vikings and the Idaho State Bengals.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Portland State vs. Idaho State prediction, preview

The scoring shape starts with pace and defense, not vibes. Portland State plays fast at 72.2 possessions per game, while Idaho State sits at 68.4, so the midpoint lives near 70. Portland State’s defense is the loudest unit on the floor, holding opponents to a 47.3% eFG and 29.5% from three. Idaho State’s offense can score cleanly when it gets rhythm, sitting at a 53.5% eFG with 35.3% from three. The problem is the other end, where Idaho State is allowing a 52.4% opponent eFG and 54.6% on twos. Recent form sharpens that contrast instead of softening it. Portland State is 4–1 in the last five with opponents held to 39.6% shooting and 26.1% from three. Idaho State is 1–4 in the last five while allowing 45.6% overall and 35.5% from deep.

The margins tonight should come from shot volume and free points. Portland State rebounds like a grown-up, sitting at 75.3% defensive rebounding and allowing just a 24.7% opponent offensive rebounding rate. Idaho State can still manufacture second chances, but it needs to win the glass cleanly to survive a road game here. The whistle is the swing factor that keeps the underdog alive, because Portland State sends teams to the line. Opponents are getting there at a 0.455 FTA/FGA rate, and Portland State is committing 20.7 fouls per game. Idaho State’s own free-throw draw is real at a 0.386 FTA/FGA rate, and the last five games have already shown whistle volatility. Eastern Washington took 34 free throws against Idaho State, and Idaho took 31, so this matchup can get noisy without either team changing identity. Turnovers add another layer of volatility, because Portland State’s turnover rate is 16.8%, even though it forces giveaways at a 16.3% clip. Idaho State doesn’t generate much theft, so Portland State should see cleaner possessions than usual if it stays composed.

Terri Miller III (G) is Portland State’s initiator and stabilizer at 14.4 points per game. Jaylin Henderson (G) brings the secondary punch, and his 35.5% three-point stroke matters against a defense that has been giving up makeable looks. Tre’Vaughn Minott (F) is the rebounding engine at 7.1 boards per game, and his 9.5 points give Portland State a second-chance floor. Donovan Sweet (F) and Isaiah Johnson (G) keep the offense connected, with Johnson leading the team at 2.2 assists per game. Idaho State has enough shot-making to hang around if it gets the right game shape. Connor Hollenbeck (G) leads them at 13.7 points and shoots 38.0% from three, which is exactly the kind of skill that can stress a favorite. Caleb Van De Griend (F) is the rim finisher at 55.8% from the field, but the 67.5% free-throw clip introduces late-game friction. Jamison Guerra (G) is the table-setter at 4.4 assists per game, and the 43.1% mark from three gives him real bite in ball screens. Martin Kheil (G) is the volume spacer, and Idaho State needs his threes to fall to keep Portland State from sitting in help.

Idaho State vs. Portland State pick, best bet

Idaho State’s underdog cover path is simple and cashable. It launches threes at volume, taking 24.4 per game, and it can turn this into a stripe-heavy night if the whistle leans. If Hollenbeck and Kheil hit early, the scoreboard forces Portland State to keep scoring instead of grinding stops. The refutation lives in Portland State’s exact strengths. The Vikings are top-shelf at erasing clean threes, and they’ve held opponents to 26.1% from deep over the last five. Idaho State’s recent three-point offense sits at 31.9% in that same five-game window, and it already posted a 5–25 night against Eastern Washington. If Idaho State doesn’t win the three math, it needs elite defense to compensate. It hasn’t shown that defense lately, and opponents are also shooting 77.1% at the line against Idaho State.

So I land on Portland State -6.5 as the best expression of the matchup. The home dominance gives it a real floor, and the defensive profile matches Idaho State’s biggest weapon. The spread is still a little brittle because fouls can create a late backdoor, so this is medium volatility, not a “sleepwalk” favorite. Still, Idaho State’s defensive numbers don’t offer a stable stop plan, and Portland State should get enough clean looks to separate.

I’d play Portland State -6.5 to -7.5, because the math still holds before the number gets greedy. Predicted score: Portland State 72, Idaho State 64.

Best bet: Portland State -6.5 (-110) vs. Idaho State
