Neither of these teams are in good form in the Premier League at the moment, so I will give the benefit of the doubt to the better team on paper and the side playing at home. Liverpool have also dominated this fixture in recent meetings, winning each of the last four Premier League games between the teams. That includes a 3-2 win at St James’ Park earlier this season, all the way back in August.
The Reds come into this game after one of their best performances of the season, albeit in another competition. They beat Qarabag 6-0 in the Champions League on Wednesday to set themselves up in the Round of 16. Liverpool have won four straight games in all competitions that do not include the Premier League. For whatever reason, the reigning champions continue to struggle in the EPL. They have failed to win each of their last five games, drawing four of them. There’s a chance that Wednesday’s dominant result can set them up for better domestic form for the remainder of the season.
On the other side, Newcastle have also been struggling recently. The Magpies have only won one of their last five games in all competitions. In the Premier League specifically, they’ve drawn to Wolves and lost to Aston Villa in their last two outings.
Barring a draw, someone is going to get the three points here and hopefully kickstart the rest of their season. Both sides will be disappointed with how things have gone so far and where they sit in the table. Saturday’s match presents an opportunity to get things going in the right direction, and I think the Reds will be the team to do just that.
