While these organizations have Super Bowl history together, the rosters are very different from Super Bowl 49. Drake Maye headlines the Patriots, following an MVP-caliber sophomore season. He’s looking to put the cherry on top and potentially start the next New England dynasty.
Despite a terrific regular season, Maye has been subpar in the postseason. He’s fallen under a 60% completion rate in all three games, including a 47.6% completion rate in the AFC Championship. To be fair, the weather didn’t aid Maye against the Texans or Broncos. Snowy conditions make it difficult for any quarterback to thrive.
The Super Bowl is in California, so weather conditions are expected to be much, much better. Still, Maye is facing one of the best defenses in the NFL. This will be his third consecutive game against an elite defense.
Seattle allowed the fewest points and sixth fewest yards this season. Teams prefer to pass against the Seahawks, as the pass defense allowed the fifth most attempts this season. Even with such high volume, the unit allowed the 10th fewest yards, seventh fewest touchdowns, and second fewest yards per attempt, while intercepting the fifth most passes.
Maye is in for some trouble even in warmer weather. The Seahawks have swarmed opposing offenses all season, and Maye has struggled in three postseason games, albeit some poor weather. His 72% completion rate in the regular season led the NFL. He also recorded 20.8 completions per game. These numbers have dropped to 55.8% and 14.3 completions in the playoffs.
Maye isn’t a high-volume passer, and although teams pass more often against Seattle, Maye isn’t going to change his play style. Efficiency is of the utmost importance, but it seems likely Maye struggles with that in Super Bowl 60.
