Auburn Tigers vs. Texas Longhorns prediction, pick for NCAAM on Wednesday 1/28/26

Texas is 12–8 and still trying to turn SEC life into something stable. Auburn is 13–7, back on its home floor, and hunting clean separation in the standings. Neville Arena is never quiet when a ranked scalp is on the table. This is also a weird little history spot, because Texas hasn’t played at Auburn since 1911. I expect a fast, physical game that keeps asking who can score through contact. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for tonight’s college basketball game between the Auburn Tigers and the Texas Longhorns.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Auburn vs. Texas prediction, preview

The math says this game lives in the extra-possession and free-points lanes, not just shotmaking. Texas is a shot-quality bully at 54.2% eFG and a vicious 36.6% offensive-rebound rate. Auburn is right there on the glass too, at 36.8% ORB, so second chances should be a constant drumbeat. The whistle lane is even louder: Texas sits at 0.474 FTA/FGA, Auburn at 0.469, and both rank top-six nationally. That’s why I’m hesitant to lay a hook with a favorite here, because foul math can keep a dog upright.

Texas’s best version is simple and very real: win the paint, win the line, and make every Auburn run cost possessions. Dailyn Swain (F) is the engine, sitting at 16.9 points and 7.1 rebounds per game with 57.6% shooting. Matas Vokietaitis (C) gives them a true interior hinge, at 15.1 points and 7.2 boards per game on 62.6% from the field. Tramon Mark (G) and Jordan Pope (G) supply the perimeter counters, both around 13–14 points per game in Texas’s rotation. If Texas keeps its turnover rate steady at 12.8% of plays, it can force Auburn to actually guard multiple actions.

Auburn’s favorite case is obvious, and it’s why the number exists. Keyshawn Hall (F) is a nightly problem at 20.3 points and 7.6 rebounds with 86.5% at the stripe. He also hits 41.2% from three, which tilts closeouts into panic. Tahaad Pettiford (G) gives them pace control and pull-up threat at 13.8 points and 3.1 assists, and Kevin Overton (G) adds two-way disruption at 12.1 points and 1.6 steals. Auburn also lives at the line, makes 20.9 free throws per game, and that’s how it turns neutral half-court stretches into steady scoring.

Texas vs. Auburn pick, best bet

Here’s the counterpunch that keeps me off Auburn -6.5: Texas is built to survive bad shooting nights because it manufactures attempts. That 36.6% offensive-rebound rate and top-tier foul pressure mean the Longhorns can score without a hot arc. Auburn’s defense also allows a 51.6% opponent eFG, and it sends opponents to the line at a 0.328 opponent FTA/FGA clip. If this becomes a whistle-forward grinder with constant resets, the hook turns poisonous for the favorite. Texas doesn’t need to win the game to win the bet.

Now I’ll do the thing we have to do every time: write the credible dog tree before backing chalk. Texas’s cover tree is threes of its own, yes, but it’s mostly pace control through shot volume. Misses turn into putbacks, fouls turn into free points, and the margin never breathes. The chaos door is also live, because both teams play physical and the foul count can swing the closing minutes. Auburn can absolutely win, but laying -6.5 asks for separation in a game shaped by rebounds and free throws. That’s not the profile I want for a favorite streak.

So my best bet is Texas +6.5. The market gives Texas +6.5 at -105 with a +240 moneyline, and I’m taking the points, not the glory. I respect Auburn’s form, including road wins at Florida and Ole Miss, but Texas has its own recent proof with a road win at Alabama and an 87–67 win over Georgia. I’m pricing this like a tight, foul-heavy SEC game where both teams live in the paint.

Best bet: Texas +6.5. Predicted score: Auburn 78, Texas 74.

Best bet: Texas +6.5 (-105) at Auburn
